LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — North Las Vegas neighbors took to the skies from the ground Saturday as remote-control airplane club “Propnuts” hosted its annual neighbor appreciation day.
From high-speed jets to lizard-powered propeller planes if it’s got wings, the Propnuts will grab their remotes and fly it. While the Propnuts had plenty of fun showing their skills, Saturday’s event was focused on the community, allowing neighbors to try something new.
“They can fly airplanes and just have a good time,” Propnuts president Rex Bordwell said.
For many of the neighbors who came out to Saturday’s event, it could have been their first time flying, through what’s called the buddy box system. That buddy box system is like having two steering wheels, when flying gets sketchy, an instructor can take over.
“A lot of the people that fly the buddy boxes are kids. And kids just can’t get enough of it,” Bordwell said.
And while kids couldn’t get enough of flying, the members of Propnuts can’t either, with long-time members flying for decade after decade.
It’s not just flying, it’s also building and customizing small aircrafts like Ian Taylor’s 3-D printed lizard pilot modeled after his own pets. He was new to the hobby during last year’s community day, and now he’s all-in.
“It reminds me a lot like myself when I first started because it was actually just last year on this very same event that I didn’t know how to fly RC planes as much as I do now,” Taylor said.
Now he and the Propnuts are spreading the word on spreading your wings.
“The RC hobby is a very unique one at that and we do everything we can to try to expand it,” Taylor said.
The Propnuts meet at the North Las Vegas Airport on the fourth Wednesday of every month at 7 p.m.
