Welcome to This Week in Chinatown!
We’re in Week 2 of our Chinatown 20 series, spotlighting four more must-follow creators who are capturing the heartbeat of the corridor. This week the neighborhood is buzzing: tomorrow night’s one-night-only Encanto Puerto Rican pop-up at Petrol Head, fresh Sinaloan seafood and grilled chicken moving into the old Doya Jambong space, live music (and Phish after-party energy) at The Sand Dollar, theatre at Las Vegas Little Theatre, hot grocery deals at 99 Ranch & 168 Market, and the brand-new KROK Thai membership program. Let’s dive in!
Breaking News
Encanto by Chef Wes: Puerto Rican Soul Hits Spring Mountain Road
Chinatown’s culinary boundaries are expanding this week as Petrol Head Bar & Grill prepares to host a one-night-only takeover that trades horsepower for high-end island flavor. On Tuesday, April 14, Chef Wes brings his acclaimed Encanto concept to the corridor, offering a rare opportunity to experience elevated Puerto Rican cuisine in the heart of the district.
While Spring Mountain remains the undisputed king of Asian flavors in Las Vegas, this pop-up highlights the neighborhood’s growing reputation as a launchpad for diverse, chef-driven experiences. The evening promises a complete transformation of the Petrol Head space, pairing bold island dishes with a curated soundtrack of Spanish tunes and featured cocktails by Tequila Corrido.
More than just a standard dinner service, the event is being billed as an experience rooted in “sabor and soul.” It reflects a larger trend in Chinatown where local spots are evolving into foodie playgrounds, hosting exclusive takeovers that keep the nightlife dynamic and unpredictable.
The event kicks off at 5:00 PM at 4731 W Spring Mountain Rd #C. Because this is a one-night-only engagement, the restaurant will be open exclusively for the pop-up, and reservations are essential. Those looking to secure a table should head to the link in the Instagram bios of @petrolheadlv or @wes_thechef before the limited spots are gone.
Sinaloan Flavors Set to Replace Doya Jambong A new look is coming to the 6340 Spring Mountain Road plaza as Mariscos y Pollos Asados Estilo Sinaloa prepares to move into the former Doya Jambong & Grill space. While the spicy Korean-Chinese noodle shop’s window decals remain for now, the newly installed signage confirms a major shift toward Mexican seafood and grilled chicken. The restaurant is currently in the build-out phase and is not yet open for business.
Out with the Jambong, in with the Mariscos: The transition is officially underway at 5650 Spring Mountain Rd as Mariscos y Pollos Asados Estilo Sinaloa takes over the former Doya Jambong space.

Las Vegas Little Theatre: The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time
Located just moments away from the Spring Mountain corridor, the Las Vegas Little Theatre presents the Tony Award-winning play, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. Based on the acclaimed novel by Mark Haddon, the story follows 15-year-old Christopher Boone as he sets out to solve a local mystery, leading him on a transformative journey that challenges his perspective of the world around him.

Looking Back
The Evolution of 4300 Spring Mountain Road

In the fast-moving landscape of our district, few addresses illustrate the corridor’s changing tides quite like 4300 Spring Mountain Road. Positioned right next to the bustling Shanghai Plaza, this corner has served as a cultural and culinary anchor for decades, transitioning from traditional roots to the high-concept energy defining the area today.
The Pho Kinh Do Era
For many long-time locals, this site will always be remembered as the home of Pho Kinh Do. With its iconic blue pylon sign standing tall over the sidewalk, it was a quintessential neighborhood staple. It represented an era of the district focused on traditional, no-frills Vietnamese comfort food—a place where the steam from the broth was as constant as the community members filling the booths.
A Pivot to Bold Flavors: Hell’s Chicken
As the culinary scene began to diversify and embrace global trends, the space underwent a dramatic rebranding into Hell’s Chicken. Swapping out bowls of pho for Nashville hot chicken, the location signaled a shift toward a younger, trend-driven demographic. It was a bold departure that brought a new kind of heat to the block, reflecting the neighborhood’s growing reputation as a destination for more than just traditional fare.
The New Standard: Alchemist
Today, the evolution continues with Alchemist. The transformation into this modern venue mirrors the sophisticated development seen in neighboring plazas. The “rustic-industrial” leanings and elevated presentation of the current space align with the district’s move toward “affordable luxury” and high-concept dining.
Watching 4300 Spring Mountain Road evolve from a humble noodle shop into its current iteration is a testament to the resilience and adaptability of the community. While the tenants change, the location remains a vital piece of the district’s history—bridging the gap between the Chinatown of yesterday and the world-class destination of tomorrow.
Chinatown Gripes
The “Smart” Crosswalk Check-In
It’s been a few months since the Shanghai Plaza and Chinatown Plaza “smart” crossing went live, and while the infrastructure upgrade is noticeable, feedback from pedestrians and drivers continues to be… mixed.
Here’s what we’re consistently hearing from the corridor:
Pedestrian Priority — Still a Work in Progress:
The flashing beacons, signage, and push-button activation are clear improvements on paper. In practice, some pedestrians report inconsistent driver yielding, especially during peak hours. Many still approach the crossing cautiously rather than confidently.
Cameras & Safety Perception:
The addition of high-definition cameras and license plate readers is intended to enhance safety and accountability. That said, some in the community question whether enforcement and visibility alone are enough to change real-time driver behavior.
Signal Timing Concerns:
Feedback varies here. Some drivers mention sudden slowdowns and backups when the crossing activates, while pedestrians—especially seniors—have noted that crossing time can feel tight depending on when the signal is triggered.
Bigger Picture: Road Design & Speed:
The broader concern remains unchanged: Spring Mountain Road still operates like a high-speed arterial through one of the most pedestrian-heavy dining corridors in the city. Many feel that long-term safety improvements may ultimately depend on larger changes like speed adjustments or additional infrastructure.
The Bottom Line:
The crosswalk is a step forward and clearly part of a larger effort to improve safety—but for now, most people are still staying alert and cautious when crossing.
