LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – While a crowd in Las Vegas laughed at former president Bill Clinton’s joke about possibly ending up in a Nevada prison, he insisted on his belief that the threat of political persecution was real if Donald Trump returned to the White House.
The Kamala Harris campaign held an invite-only event at Doolittle Community Center in the Historic Westside Tuesday night featuring Bill Clinton, former president of the United States.
Clinton responded to recent statements from former president Donald Trump who said, during a recent Fox News interview, that he would use the military to go after the “enemy from within” on Election Day, pointing to Democrats and those who oppose or have investigated him.
“Dear Mr. President, if you are going to send me away, I’m nearly as old as you are and I don’t like the cold. So can you at least send me to some prison in Florida or someplace more—I’d take Nevada,” he said. “We’re laughing about this, but it’s not funny. Not funny at all.”
Infrastructure in central Nevada was an area Clinton said work had yet to be completed, pointing to the roughly 60,000 other projects worked on or completed by the Biden administration.
“In Nevada alone, there are about 9% of the people who don’t have access to affordable broadband,” Clinton said. “And that’s part of infrastructure too, and it will make a huge difference in the way those people have to live now.”
Clinton reminded event attendees to vote early or mail in their ballots, before touting the significance of Las Vegas in his family.
“My beloved mother thought she was going to Las Vegas when she died,” Clinton said. “She thought this is what heaven looked like.”
Clinton’s visit marks one of several more campaign stops in Las Vegas in the coming days. First Lady Dr. Jill Biden is set to arrive in Las Vegas Tuesday evening for an event on Wednesday. According to a news release from the campaign, she is set to discuss Harris’ “New Way Forward” during the first week of early voting.
The Republican Vice Presidential candidate J.D. Vance will deliver remarks at Treasure Island on the Las Vegas Strip, with a release from the Trump-Vance campaign promising that Vance will discuss affordability, a top issue for Nevada voters.
Harris’ running mate Tim Walz is also scheduled to head to Las Vegas on Saturday.
Meanwhile, former president Donald Trump will speak at an AAPPI event on Thursday at the Thomas & Mack Center.
