HENDERSON, NV ( KLAS ) – A local high school robotics team is heading to the world championships.

Congrats to the young men and women of the Pinecrest Academy’s Sloan Canyon campus in Henderson.

Coming in 2nd at the state tournament in Reno last weekend is good enough for an invitation to the World Championship in Dallas next month.

Designing, building and programming robots involves invaluable lessons in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math).

Coming up with team names like “Banana Sharks” shows the people side of robotics, where the students are shining examples of what’s called “gracious professionalism.”

Good luck to the Sloan Canyon Pirates, who are more than three-quarters of the way to their $30,000 fundraising goal to make the trip happen.
