LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — After falling to Adrian College in last year’s American Collegiate Hockey Association Division 1 Championship game, this year UNLV turned the tide routing the Bulldogs 7-3 to win their first-ever hockey championship.
The American Collegiate Hockey Association crowned the Rebels in St. Louis Tuesday night.
UNLV jumped out to a 4-0 lead thanks to a pair of goals by Heath Mensch. The Rebels added three more goals including a penalty shot goal by Tristin Rand.
Coach Nick Robone has been with the team for 10 years and said he’s happy for the guys.
“I don’t want to say it’s been a long time coming but it’s nice to see our hard work pay off,” he said. “Everything has to come together for this to happen, it has been a special year for us.”
Rebel goaltender Jeremy Foreman was named tournament MVP.
Earlier this season UNLV beat Denver University, the NCAA division one defending national champions, and now the Rebels are champions themselves for the first time in school history.
