LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Thousands of students have returned to campus at UNLV this week in preparation for classes that start on Monday.
The fall semester will see record-breaking enrollment numbers for the university with 32,000 students expected to attend classes this fall. Around one-third of those students are new students coming to campus for the first time.
More than 1,700 students are moving onto campus, a record for the number of students in their residential housing as well.
This week the university hosted its Rebel Ready Week introducing new students to resources on campus.
“It’s all about helping our students create a sense of belongingness and helping them connect to each other and our campus. It’s leading us right into the beginning of classes next week and we’re really excited to have everyone here,” Barb Roberts, associate vice president of Enrollment Management said.
The fall semester will also mark the opening of Beam Hall for the first time since the shooting last year.
“There has definitely been work that has happened in Beam Hall and they’re going to be doing an opening with our president and announcements around that in the coming weeks,” Roberts said.
New security features at Beam Hall include more cameras, elevator, and stairwell access controls, and added onsite security. Across campus more than $1 million in exterior lighting upgrades are in progress as part of the $2.5 million in Rebel Recovery efforts.
Also, this year it will be the first time classes will be held at the new Advanced Engineering Building. Also, the Institute for Financial Literacy and Wellness will launch, new classes, and a new bachelor’s degree program in Creative Practice.
Rebel Ready week concludes on Friday with a welcome ceremony and convocation at the Thomas and Mack Center. For more information, click here.
