What’s New In Chinatown?

This Week in Chinatown: Bustling Through the Breeze!

Welcome to this week’s edition of  This Week in Chinatown, brought to you by Chinatownvegas.com!

Wow, what a week! Even with nearly three straight days of high winds that had flags flapping and takeout containers dancing across the street, Chinatown kept on bustling! This just goes to show the unwavering spirit of our community.

Speaking of community, we’re excited to introduce a new segment this week: Looking Back!

In each edition, we’ll revisit what was happening a year ago, taking a nostalgic trip down memory lane and seeing how things have evolved (or sometimes, haven’t!).

Now, before we get swept away on a nostalgia wave, let’s tackle some real-world issues. The traffic cones at the intersection of Spring Mountain and Decatur still stand strong, defying all logic. The traffic light timers there seem to have a mind of their own, making even the most seasoned drivers hesitant. And of course, those pesky potholes haven’t magically disappeared.

But hey, it wouldn’t be Chinatown without a little “character,” right? Let’s not let these minor roadblocks hold us back. There’s still a world of delicious food, vibrant culture, and hidden gems waiting to be discovered. So, buckle up, grab your chopsticks (or fork!), and let’s dive into the best of what Chinatown has to offer this week.

Suzuya Cafe will be a welcome addition to our amazing Chinatown

Got a sweet tooth, get ready to rejoice! Our sources, who rarely steer us wrong, have revealed that Suzuya Patisserie is all but set to take over the former Half Bird Chicken location at the Center at Spring Mountain. This location will be named Suzuya Cafe and will be more cafe-focused than a cake shop.

While there hasn’t been an official confirmation just yet, all signs point towards a delightful new addition to Chinatown’s culinary scene. The recently vacated Half Bird spot seems like the perfect canvas for a “Suzuya Cafe,” offering a haven for fans of Suzuya’s delectable Japanese-inspired pastries.

Half Bird Chicken announced the closure of their Chinatown branch in December 2023, leaving a prime location ripe for a new venture. Suzuya Patisserie, known for its melt-in-your-mouth pastries, could be the perfect fit to fill the void.

Although details regarding the official opening date and menu offerings remain under wraps, Chinatownvegas.com is confident this sweet deal is sealed. We’ll continue to dig for more information and keep you updated as the story unfolds. Stay tuned to see if Suzuya’s signature treats will soon be gracing the corner of what’s labeled “Restaurant Row

Looking Back:

A Year Ago This Week in Chinatown (March 10, 2023)

Let’s take a memory lane trip to Chinatown on March  10, 2023! Back then, excitement was brewing for the much-anticipated arrival of Ramen Boys, a new contender in the Las Vegas ramen scene. Chef Yosuke, with his expertise in Japanese cuisine, promised to tantalize taste buds with yuzu shio and tonkatsu ramen varieties, alongside crispy chicken skin and karaage.

Meanwhile, the Lev Group was gearing up to launch 00 Pie and Pub, a haven for pizza lovers. “00” in the name referenced the preferred flour of pizza artisans worldwide, hinting at the focus on authentic and delicious pizzas.

Another interesting development was Grand Cru by Partage. This immersive food and wine experience promised to elevate Chinatown’s culinary offerings by offering a sophisticated and unique dining adventure and it sure did.

Finally, the familiar stairs leading to the second floor of Chinatown Plaza were slated for some much-needed TLC. Believe it or not, they still haven’t begun repairs.

Fast forward to today, (March 2024) stair repairs aside, and it’s fascinating to see how these establishments have evolved and become part of Chinatown’s vibrant tapestry. Did Ramen Boys live up to the hype? Yep. Has 00 Pie and Pub become a go-to spot for pizza enthusiasts? Absolutely, yes. We’ll explore the answers to these questions and more in the coming weeks!

Building Bridges, Patrolling Streets: New Task Force Strengthens Chinatown Security

This week, we shine a light on a positive development for Chinatown’s safety. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) has established a dedicated task force specifically for the Chinatown Corridor. Nicknamed the “Mike and Ike” team, these officers are committed to patrolling the area and building positive relationships with the community.

This initiative aims to address a significant concern: under-reported crimes in Chinatown. By building trust and rapport with businesses and residents, the “Mike and Ike” team hopes to encourage more people to report crime and work collaboratively to ensure a safer environment for everyone.

One of the team’s top goals and approach plan is to tackle car break-ins, a major concern for many business owners.

Be Aware, Be Safe: These signs, popping up throughout Chinatown serve as a reminder to take precautions against break-ins.

This dedicated task force signifies LVMPD’s commitment to Chinatown’s well-being. We’re encouraged by this proactive measure and look forward to the positive impact it will have on our community.

This Week’s Featured Dish: A Taste of Colombia in Your Own Chinatown – Arecely’s Arroz con Pollo!

A little Latin flair in this week’s “Featured Dish” segment! This week, we’re celebrating the diverse flavors of Chinatown by featuring the incredible Arroz con Pollo (Chicken and Rice) from Arecely Colombian Restaurant located right here in Kangnam Square

Arecely's Arroz con pollo

Arroz Con Pollo at Arecly

A Culinary Gem: Arroz con Pollo, meaning “chicken with rice” in Spanish, is a comforting and satisfying dish found throughout Latin America. Each region offers its own unique variations, and Arecely’s version embodies the heart and soul of Colombian cuisine. At just $16.95 and including your choice of two sides, it’s a delicious and affordable way to explore Colombian flavors.

The Colombian Touch: While the basic ingredients of rice and chicken remain constant, Colombian Arroz con Pollo often incorporates achiote oil, a bright red condiment extracted from the annatto seed. This adds a subtle earthy and slightly peppery taste to the dish. Additionally, Colombian Sofrito, a flavorful blend of onions, garlic, bell peppers, and spices, is often used to create a rich base for the rice.

A Feast for the Senses: Arecely’s Arroz con Pollo promises juicy shredded chicken, cooked to perfection and nestled amongst fluffy yellow rice bursting with authentic Colombian flavors. To complete the experience, choose two sides from their selection to create a satisfying and well-rounded meal.

A Convenient Culinary Adventure: No need to travel far! Head down to Arecely Colombian Restaurant in Kangnam Square to experience this delicious taste of Colombia right within your own Chinatown.

From potential home runs with the Taiwanese batting cages to increased security efforts with the new police task force, Chinatown continues to buzz with activity. And let’s not forget the delicious Colombian flavors waiting to be explored at Arecely’s! Remember, Chinatown is a vibrant tapestry constantly evolving. New businesses emerge, exciting developments unfold, and our sense of community strengthens. What happens in Chinatown, Happens Here. See ya next week!
