A look back at the time of Las Vegas Chinatown
Looking Back:
When Resorts World Rose, Right Next Door
Â

The early days: Resorts World begins to rise, changing the landscape near Chinatown.
Every major development in Las Vegas leaves its mark, and for our Chinatown community, few have been as significant as the rise of Resorts World Las Vegas. This week, our “Looking Back” spotlight turns to a pivotal moment, captured in this very image, when the future began to take shape right on our doorstep.
Remember when the street signs started to change? This photo, taken during the initial phases of construction, shows the freshly installed “Resorts World Dr” sign, marking the official renaming of a section of what was formerly Paradise Road. Beyond that sign, you can see the imposing structure of what would become a massive parking garage and the early foundations of the integrated resort. The site, once home to the historic Stardust, was buzzing with the promise of something entirely new.
Resorts World’s proximity to our Chinatown district — just a stone’s throw away on the north end of the Strip — was, and continues to be, immensely significant. As this colossal resort began to take shape, it signaled a new era for our neighborhood. The anticipation grew for the thousands of new visitors it would attract, many of whom would undoubtedly discover the authentic flavors, unique shops, and vibrant culture of Chinatown, just a short walk or drive away.
This early construction phase, when the street was renamed and the steel skeleton of the resort began to climb towards the sky, marked the beginning of a powerful synergy. It connected the energy of the Las Vegas Strip even more directly to our thriving community, bringing new eyes and opportunities to the diverse businesses that call Chinatown home. It’s a reminder of how our district continues to evolve, adapting and thriving alongside the city’s ever-changing landscape, while maintaining its unique identity and spirit.

Community Corner

Highlighting the people and places that make our Chinatown special.
Chinatown joins the 18th annual Las Vegas Restaurant Week, a 12-day culinary event in early June that celebrates dining while giving back to the community. This beloved tradition offers a chance to savor special menus at some of Chinatown’s finest restaurants, all while supporting a great cause through the culinary arts.
Participating establishments in Chinatown include China Mama (Jones at Mountain View Plaza and Shanghai Plaza), Double Zero Pie and Pub (The Center at Spring Mountain), EDO Gastro Tapas & Wine (Mountain View Plaza), Kaiseki Yuzu (China Town Retail Plaza), Lamaii (Shan Tau Square), Mr. BBQ (Spring Mountain Rd. near Shanghai Plaza), Partage (The Center at Spring Mountain), and Sparrow and Wolf (Shan Tau Square). Make your reservations today to explore new dishes, revisit favorites, and contribute to the spirit of giving that defines this event, right here in the heart of Chinatown. 🤝
Chinatown Gripes
Traffic woes continue to challenge both residents and visitors in Las Vegas’ Chinatown, with inefficient traffic light timers topping the list of concerns. Across the city, Las Vegas drivers reportedly endure more wasted time idling at signals than anywhere else in the nation—a problem that hits hard in Chinatown. For example, the traffic light timer at Tenaya gives just a 10-second window before 5 AM, causing unnecessary delays. Even a short 1.5-mile drive from Starbucks to Desert Breeze Park can take up to 25 minutes at 4 AM due to excessively long waits at lights, frustrating early risers and late-night explorers alike.
Making left turns is another major hurdle, especially at busy intersections and out of bustling shopping malls like Shanghai Plaza. Navigating across four lanes to turn left—whether at a light or exiting a plaza—often disrupts the entire flow of traffic in the vicinity. Has the city assessed the feasibility and impact of allowing these left turns from high-traffic commercial areas? For visitors heading to events like Las Vegas Restaurant Week or Shop Local Sunday at 168 Market and 99 Ranch Market, these delays can dampen the experience.
Other local issues also demand attention. Ferocious potholes near McDonald’s leading to Lindell Road jolt drivers, while a blinding, strobe-like parking lot light near One Piece Cafe disrupts the area’s ambiance. Additionally, the 45 mph speed limit on Spring Mountain feels too high given the significant pedestrian activity, especially during busy events.
To improve traffic flow and enhance the quality of life in Chinatown, authorities must prioritize solutions. Hiring a specialized traffic consultant and implementing intelligent sensor technology for dynamic signal recalibration could address the timer issues. A re-evaluation of left-turn permissions from high-traffic plazas, along with fixes for potholes and lighting, would also make a big difference. Share your traffic experiences and ideas for improvement with us on social media @ChinatownVegas —We’d love to hear your thoughts! 🚗
