LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – A driver accused by police of running a red light, and DUI, that left five people injured has been released from jail, according to online court records.
The crash occurred on Monday shortly before 11 p.m. near the intersection of Boulder Highway and Desert Inn Road.
Las Vegas Metropolitan police arrested Carlos Alvarez, 36, in the collision. He faces two charges of DUI resulting in bodily harm, two charges of reckless driving resulting in bodily harm, and one charge of driving through a red light, according to court records.
When officers initially arrived at the scene of the crash, they found Alvarez inside a Ford F150 with the truck lying on its driver’s side. Alvarez was later helped out of the truck by officers, according to the police report.
Two people also face life-threatening injuries and three others were hurt in the crash on Monday, police stated.
During the police investigation, officers noted in the police report that Alvarez had “bloodshot watery eyes and a strong odor of an unknown intoxicating substance emanating from his breath.”
Alvarez told officers at the scene that he was using medication and stopped drinking due to taking the medication, according to the report. He then told officers he was driving his truck from his home to the Venetian where he works. However, he also stated that he could not recount the moments leading up to the accident and stated he only remembered driving on Desert Inn Road but not approaching the intersection, traveling through the intersection, or what color the signal was at the intersection, according to the police report.
Alvarez was initially asked to submit a blood test but refused. Due to an injury to his wrist and ankle, no other tests were able to be performed at the scene of the crash, according to the police report.
Another scheduled hearing is set for January 14, according to court records.
