She wishes she could take naps. Instead, she’s busy day and night. Sarah LeClear is a choreographer and dancer in Las Vegas.

In Sarah’s spare time, she works with a number of entertainment/production companies planning and executing large scale special events. She may also be choreographing for entertainers (like Zowie Bowie) who wish to add dancing segments to their shows.

But her principal job there days? Sarah is currently choreographer for the April musical theater production of FOLLIES. Sarah and her husband Alejandro, along with Sheri Miralt and her husband, Don, are also appearing in the show’s Bolero number.

Days off? Seldom.

Sarah’s love affair with dance began when she was a youngster watching her older sister take dance lessons, Her parents, who introduced the youngsters to live theater, then provided dance lessons for Sarah, too. She has never looked back.

Talking about dance, Sarah is astonishingly upbeat. Even her voicemail message is fun and positive. In person, attractive and slim with a big smile, she says things like, “Once a dancer always a dancer” or “Dancing chooses us and then we choose it back” or “Dancing is an outlet for creativity and expression – everyone who is a performer can relate to it” or “I love what I do so much.”

Sarah’s first professional job? Raised in northern California, Sarah was hired at 19 years old as an NBA dancer with the Golden State Warriors. After one season, wanting to train with professional choreographers, Sarah moved to Los Angeles.

A friend was going to a dance audition for Royal Caribbean Cruises. Sarah went along, also auditioned and was hired. Figuring the cruise ship Job would give her an opportunity to earn money, see the world and perform for different audiences every week, Sarah set off to dance on the seas.

What surprised Sarah about the Royal Caribbean job was how serious it was. Rehearsals required the best of her.

“I was able to work with so many incredible choreographers who pushed me stylistically and was able to watch how a show is built,” she said. She completed six contracts with Royal Caribbean. “The cruise ship was a perfect place to hone in on skills.”

During her fourth contract, Sarah met and fell in love with a talented male dancer from Argentina, Alejandro Domingo. The two were paired as a ballroom dance couple and as aerialists. They were together for two additional contracts and married in 2011.

Sarah was then asked to become a rehearsal director for Royal Caribbean. She and her husband moved to Florida, though her husband often auditioned in New York. When Alejandro was booked for the Jubilee Show in Las Vegas, the couple moved to Las Vegas.

Once in Las Vegas, Sarah booked a job with Vegas the Show. She was in the show for four and a half years as Dance Captain and Principal Dancer and Alejandro later joined her in the cast as dance captain.

From Vegas the Show the couple moved to the show BAZ as the featured ballroom couple. Sarah says, “To this day, Baz is my favorite show.” That show ran for five years.

Following Baz, Sarah and Alejandro became “swings” for the Donny and Marie show. Sarah and her husband were with the last year of the show. Again a “special” job.

During her time with Donny and Marie, Sarah explored other opportunities, in particular, working with production companies in sales, casting, artistic direction, concept design and choreography. That learning experience led her and her husband to form a company “Hummingbird Productions,” a full service entertainment consulting company. From concept to execution, Sarah can produce, choreograph or even host such shows.

So yes, Las Vegas has been a welcoming town. The couple lives in Southern Highlands with their dog Milo. Says Sarah, “We are lucky and blessed enough to create, produce and perform together all these years.”

And Sarah? Her background gave her experience in choreography and it’s a favorite passion. Not all dancers become choreographers, she says, but show production was always an interest of hers.

Sarah’s process usually begins with listening to the music she is choreographing over and over. She then goes to a studio and films herself with the steps she thinks will fit the music. If a group of dancers are involved, she will move chess pieces on a board to simulate the movement of the dancers. And voila! She has the final idea of how a dance should feel and be executed. “It’s a deeply creative process holding a vision that’s thoughtful and giving it life through movement.”

Sarah might audition dancers during the day and then knowing the dancers she wants, at night continue the choreographing. She is all business when rehearsals begin, but she makes it a point to know the names of her dancers. In working with the seasoned former showgirl dancers in FOLLIES, Sarah said, “Allow me to guide you back home.”

Yes, Sarah LeClear is easy to like. Entertainer Bubba Knight was talking after one FOLLIES rehearsal and said, “I love working with Sarah; she has a gift.”
