LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — New apartments could soon be on the way as Golden Entertainment, which owns Arizona Charlie’s, and Fore Property Company are looking to build housing in a vacant lot in the central Las Vegas valley.
This mixed-use concept would have 294 residential units and just over 9,000 square feet of commercial space on Decatur Boulevard and Evergreen Avenue. The proposal is set to be discussed at Tuesday’s Planning Commission meeting.
“Whatever can expand the valley I guess, but I hope it’s more affordable housing. That would be good,” valley resident, Jackie Rhoda, told 8 News Now.
Others acknowledging that the central valley needs some upgrades so this development would give the area that extra boost.
“We need a little help over here,” Alexandra Perez shared. “It would be nice to see new apartment complexes. Giving the people some type of incentive to want to be here.”
Even so, there are longtime residents like Luisa Martinez who think otherwise.
“I really don’t support the idea,” Luisa Martinez shared with 8 News Now. “Adding more development is going to create more crime, I believe, especially with this potential complex being right next to the casino.”
Overall, the project proposal includes two three-story buildings with enhanced landscaping, a resort-style pool, clubhouse, and state-of-the-art fitness center.
In addition, the plan is set to have over 500 parking spaces for residents and guests. The planning commission meeting takes place March 11 at 6 p.m. at City Hall. It is open to the public.
Las Vegas City Councilman Brian Knudsen of ward 1 shared the following statement with 8 News Now ahead of Tuesday’s meeting.
“Housing is one of the most critical needs in our valley and I’m excited to work with the developer and the surrounding neighborhoods to make this another premier community for Las Vegas.”
