LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — As a person ages, staying active is important for physical and mental well-being.

May 29 is National Senior Health and Fitness Day aimed at improving the overall well-being of seniors. The day emphasizes the need to prioritize a healthy diet that improves energy and immunity and encourages exercise to preserve bone density and reduce the risk of fractures, medical conditions, and illnesses.

There are numerous options available for physical activity for seniors in the Las Vegas valley. The YMCA of Southern Nevada offers a variety of fitness classes at its various locations designed with seniors in mind. The classes include Zumba, Tai Chi, aquafit, strength training. Jonathan Jimenez a health and wellness instructor teaches “Get Movin’ with Jonathan”, a fitness class combining cardio and dance.

“What’s great about this class is its cognitive function, and we need that as we age,” he said. “So, not just the health and fitness part, but working (our) brain as well.”

Seniors in the valley can join the Y’s Active Older Adults program which emphasizes friendship, fitness, and fun. The program features a variety of fitness classes as well as social activities. Free membership is available through some insurance programs. Financial assistance is also available for those who qualify.
