LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The Nevada State Railroad Museum in Boulder City is honoring those who serve by offering free admission to active-duty military personnel and their families.
Blue Star Museums provide free admission to active-duty military personnel, including members of the National Guard and Reserves, and their families. This nationwide initiative runs from Armed Forces Day through Labor Day. The Nevada State Railroad Museum is proud to be one of over 2,000 museums across the country taking part in the program.
MacMahon showcased several of the museum’s historic railcars, including a standout—the Railway Post Office Car. This served as a mobile post office, where clerks sorted mail while the train was en route to its destinations.
He explained the fascinating “mail-on-the-fly” technique, where a moving train would use a mail hook to grab a sack of incoming mail hanging trackside, without ever stopping. As for outgoing mail? Postal workers would simply kick the mail sack off the train while it was still moving.
Another highlight of the museum’s collection is the luxury railcar known as the Ellesmere. Built in the late 1890s, this elegant private car features an all-wood interior adorned with rich finishes and intricate details. Once owned by a private collector in Las Vegas, it now resides at the museum.
The Nevada State Railroad Museum is open daily from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and train rides are available on weekends. Active-duty military families receive free admission through the Blue Star Museums program until Labor Day.
