LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Nevada lawmakers announced Monday in a letter to Governor Joe Lombardo that a hearing will be held in December on the Clark County School District’s budget shortfall.

A legislative Education Accountability subcommittee was formed during the last legislative session when the district’s historic budget was approved. It’s led by Senate Majority Leader Nicole Cannizzaro and Assembly Speaker Steve Yeager and has the authority to “investigate fiscal policy and school finance” and will conduct the hearing during its upcoming Dec. 16 meeting.

“While we appreciate the Governor’s interest in the ongoing audit, we think it is unwise to wait so long to seek answers as to why, despite record State funding, the Clark County School District seemingly found itself surprised by an unforeseen budget deficit for the 2024-2025 academic year. The issue is affecting students, families, teachers, and staff now, and it demands more immediate answers,” Cannizzaro said.

She added, that addressing the shortfall before the start of the 2025 Legislative Session will allow lawmakers to determine if additional legislation is needed.

CCSD’s financial issues came to light in October when the district fired its CFO and then announced it was dealing with a $20M shortfall. Days later, the district revised the shortfall to $10M.
