LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — With Memorial Day weekend fast approaching, many in Las Vegas are gearing up to hit the road for the long holiday. But before they do, some are keeping a close eye on gas prices at the pump.

Gas prices in Nevada have dropped 43 cents compared to this time last year, according to AAA.

The current average for a gallon of regular gas sits just under $4, at $3.956. Last year, that same gallon would have cost $4.388. Despite the dip, many drivers express how fuel costs are still straining their budgets, especially with the holiday travel weekend approaching.

“I want to (travel), but gas is just ridiculous,” Ronda Pruitt said.

“I don’t understand how all over town, they’re different prices,” Booker Henry said.

Gas prices can differ depending on the location, and drivers are feeling the impact.

At a Sinclair station near Desert Inn and Decatur, people said they are doing what they can to cut costs, choosing where to fuel up based on pump prices and whether the station offers rewards or loyalty points.

“If I go to Smith’s, I save on gas because they give you discounts. But if I come to Sinclair, their gas is lower than Terrible’s,” Henry said. “But if I go to Shell or any of those, they’re very expensive.”

According to AAA, the national average for a gallon of gas is currently $3.17. In Nevada, the record-high price per gallon was $5.67, set back in June 2022.
