LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has sounded the alarm again and again. Drivers aren’t paying attention. The roads are deadly.

On Thursday, Metro said there have been more than 100 deadly wrecks within its jurisdiction so far in 2024 and crashes caused by speeding are up 83%.

In an effort to reinforce safety, police are saturating some of the deadliest intersections in town. Friday officers watched and waited for the inevitable at Blue Diamond and Decatur.

“At this intersection, we’ve had 19 wrecks year-to-date and that’s within the intersection. That’s not counting a couple hundred yards down the road,” according to Lt. Tony Cavaricci with Metro’s Traffic Bureau.

A handful of officers staked out the intersection for about three hours in the morning, making 51 stops. Police issued 14 speeding tickets, seven tickets for red light runners and 18 tickets were given to drivers using their cell phones while driving.

“We’re not only trying to prevent fatal accidents, but serious injury accidents,” Cavaricci said.

Police also reminded bicyclists and pedestrians that they are not above the law.

“They still have to follow the rules of the road,” Cavaricci said. “You can’t dart into traffic.”
