LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A Clark County jury delivered a guilty verdict Thursday against a man who killed his ex-wife inside a Las Vegas Strip hotel room.

Las Vegas Metro police arrested Fernando Gomez, 44, on May 28, 2023, after he called 911 to say that his wife was dead and that he had tried to kill himself, documents said. Gomez and his ex-wife, Nydia Lopez-Garcia, 37, were visiting from Texas.

When police arrived at the pair’s MGM Grand hotel room, they found Lopez-Garcia on the floor with cuts and blunt-force trauma. Medical personnel determined that she was beyond help and pronounced her dead on the scene.

Gomez and Lopez-Garcia were married for 14 years before they separated in 2022, police said at the time of his arrest. The pair traveled to Las Vegas with their three children who were not in the room.

Gomez told police he and Lopez-Garcia began to argue. He later smashed a bottle on the ground and held a piece of glass to her own throat, documents said. Gomez told police that he grabbed the glass and killed her with it.

The jury returned its guilty verdict Thursday after a short trial for a charge of murder with the murder of a deadly weapon, a court spokesperson said.

Gomez will be sentenced on April 2.
