LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — While Las Vegas drivers navigate rain-soaked roads for the first time in awhile, the Nevada Legislature has shut down for the day to keep drivers out of hazardous conditions in the Reno-Carson City area.

A notice posted on the Legislature’s website this morning kept workers at home and canceled a day of scheduled meetings in the Assembly and Senate.

“Due to continued hazardous driving conditions across the region, including parts of Washoe, Carson, Lyon, Douglas, and Storey counties, the Carson City Legislative Offices will be closed today, Thursday, February 13,” the notice said.

Schools in Carson City are closed today, and classes at UNR and the Washoe County School District were planning a late start with an eye on the weather.

A social post on X by the Nevada Department of Transportation early Thursday morning proclaimed, “It’s happening!” as a winter storm arrived in the Sierra Nevada. “The forecast storm is here, with snow across much of northwestern NV and chain controls on many highways,” NDOT said.

Interstate 80 remained open between Reno and Sacramento, but social posts described “life threatening whiteout conditions on Donner Pass.”
