LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Get fit and active at the YMCA! The City of Las Vegas is partnering with the YMCA of Southern Nevada to host Healthy Senior Day, an event to promote healthy living among those 50 years and older.

Vendors are on-site to offer senior resources and provide essential lifestyle information. Fitness demos will also be offered during the event to showcase physical activities anyone can do at any age.

“You can be two different kinds of 80. It’s your choice,” said Jonathan Jimenez, health and wellness director. “We’re trying to stay healthy – mind, body, and soul.”

The fitness activities aim to improve strength, mobility, endurance, recovery, and cognitive health. Featured fitness demos include functional fitness emphasizing mobility and reducing stress and tension, sit and fit for low-impact strength building, and dance fitness demos to boost cardio and improve cognitive function.

“It is so important for mobility and (being) active,” said Jennifer Blanchard, coordinator of the Centennial Hills Active Adults Center for the city of Las Vegas. “These guys are amazing. They are a testament to active living and what exercise does for you, and they inspire me every day.”

Healthy Senior Day runs from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Centennial Hills Y located on Buffalo Drive and Thursday, Aug. 29. The event is free and open to the public.

For seniors looking for long-term services, the YMCA also offers its Live Strong Program to help cancer survivors. One of the side effects of many cancer diagnoses is loss of independence and the ability to move on one’s own. The program teaches exercises that help to improve and rebuild strength and mobility. The program is free of charge. The YMCA is also hosting a Live Strong Party on Friday, Sept. 13 to raise money to support the free program.
