LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — With the April 15 tax deadline almost a month away, there are a slew of resources in the community for help with tax preparation.

Organizations in the valley are hosting free assistance.

Free tax prep is available through the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. Volunteers are set up at Chicanos por la Causa on Bonanza Road and Maryland Parkway. Rumaldo Chaidez said VITA volunteers came to the nonprofit a few years ago and were welcomed with open arms. Chicanos por la Causa is a nonprofit that offers assistance for housing and small businesses.

“The first year, they were able to deliver tax services for about 600 households,” Chaidez said.

Chaidez said saving money now is a major help. He’s heard horror stories of people being charged hundreds of dollars for preparation assistance.

“Every penny counts, right?” Chaidez said. “Especially, the costs of groceries are going up, the cost of gas, so it’s money the household can apply in other areas.”

Free tax prep is available to anyone making under $60,000 per year as well as veterans, seniors and limited English speakers. At Chicanos por la Causa, volunteers are available to assist in English, Spanish and Tagalog. Leslie Donovan received free tax prep Friday, and says the process was helpful.

“It’s actually free and I really, I come here because this particular, establishment actually believes in giving back to the community,” Donovan said. “So it appeals to my heart.”

Appealing to the heart, and to the wallet. Chicanos por la Causa’s tax prep services are available Thursdays through Saturdays.
