LAS VEGAS (KLAS) A beloved giraffe named Ozzie who was known for painting with his tongue died Friday morning at the Lion Habitat Ranch in Henderson.

The ranch announced Ozzie’s death on its Facebook page.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ozzie, one of our cherished animal family members. Ozzie, the majestic giraffe who graced the ranch, succumbed to injuries sustained from an early morning fall. His loss reverberates through the ranch, leaving an indelible mark on our hearts.

The post went on to say that overnight Ozzie stumbled and fell down and couldn’t get back up. Staff members, the owners and veterinarians were with him throughout the night “providing round-the-clock care” but the giraffe did not recover.

Ozzie, who turned 10 earlier this year, was a favorite for visitors to the Lion Habitat Ranch. He captured national attention for his abstract paintings. He would grip a paintbrush in his mouth and paint a canvas. His paintings were sold and helped raise money for the habitat.

The Lion Habitat said it will be closed on Friday, Aug. 2 for team members “to mourn, to remember, and to honor the legacy of a remarkable giraffe who forever touched our hearts.”
