LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A Las Vegas elementary school teacher faces a child abuse charge after police said he pushed a 10-year-old student, documents say.

Mateusz Baran, 47, appeared before a Las Vegas Justice Court Judge on Thursday. He was arrested Dec. 16 for child abuse/neglect

Baran was a teacher at Sunrise Acres Elementary School near Stewart Avenue and 28th Street.

According to an arrest report, Baran pushed a 10-year-old boy to the ground after he spilled some water. The incident reportedly caused the student to sprain his shoulder.

CCSDPD officers interviewed seven students who said they witnessed Baran push the child. They all said Baran instructed the student to clean up the water before pushing him, according to police.

Baran is scheduled to return to court on April 17. He has been placed on paid leave per the district’s negotiated agreement with the Clark County Education Association.

He has been employed with the district since July 2024, according to the Clark County School District.
