LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A now-71-year-old man who killed his 96-year-old father will serve at least six years in prison after killing him during an argument about bald men.

In July 2020, Oris Jones killed Richard Jones in the home they shared near Tropicana Avenue and Durango Drive in the southwest valley.

Richard Jones suffered multiple contusions to his head and cuts on his left ear during a fight, police said at the time of his son’s arrest. Oris Jones told police he was watching a show featuring comedian Steve Harvey when he got “riled up” after his father began speaking badly about Harvey and bald men.

Oris Jones pleaded guilty but mentally ill to a charge of voluntary manslaughter with an enhancement since his father was above the age of 60. The plea deal stipulated a sentence of six to 15 years.

On Thursday, Clark County District Court Judge Tierra Jones sentenced him to that sentence. He declined to speak during the sentencing when Jones asked him if he had anything to say.

Oris Jones’ attorney added he hoped his client would continue his mental health treatment in prison. Under Nevada law, defense lawyers must prove their client is mentally ill when pleading guilty to the stipulation. The language means a judge could add mental health treatment as part of sentencing.
