LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A Las Vegas man claims that he is missing thousands of dollars worth of belongings after moving across town.
Moving can be tough but when your valuables go missing, it makes for an even more frustrating situation. Matt Messiha told 8 News Now that the moving company he used lost some of his family’s items in what they thought was a simple move.
“There are a lot of corrupt businesses that aren’t doing what they are supposed to and a lot of theft has been happening recently,” Messiha said. “We’re unpacking and we realize we are missing five lamps and several different pieces of furniture.”
That’s not all. Several pieces of artwork and family heirlooms were also gone.
“The next day we made a list of everything missing from electronics like my X-box to utensils,” Messiha shared.
He called on the moving company, “Two Men and A Truck,” to find his items, but no luck.
Messiha told 8 News Now that while the company is now trying to resolve things, initially they told him that they never moved the missing items to begin with. The company also shared with him that it’s not just the movers who had access to the truck so Messiha believes it could be anyone on their team who allegedly took his belongings.
8 News Now stopped by “Two Men and a Truck” in North Las Vegas to get some answers and left a message. Soon after, Matt contacted 8 News Now stating they told him they would have their insurance company call him to settle.
So what do you do if this happens to you?
Peter Aldous with the Legal Aid of Southern Nevada says it’s vital to report the movers immediately to the police and the Better Business Bureau if you believe in any wrongdoing.
Also, take pictures of the items ahead of time before they get moved and get insurance on high-cost pieces. Make sure that whatever movers you use are licensed. You can head to the Nevada Transportation Authority to check their status.
In addition to contacting authorities, for many, the next step would be to get lawyers involved.
If you are planning a move, call several companies to compare costs, ask for references, also ask what kind of liability coverage options they provide.
