LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A man faces several charges including open murder and kidnapping after police said he killed a man in a disagreement over money and tried to force his girlfriend to drive him out of state, according to police documents.
On Sunday, Aug. 11, 2024 shortly before 10 p.m., officers with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department responded to an apartment complex in the 5000 block of Maryland Parkway, near Tropicana Avenue, after reports that a man was shot.
Arriving officers found a man, later identified as Eric Davis, unresponsive with a gunshot wound near a garbage bin. Medical personnel declared him dead at the scene.
Surveillance video from the area showed Davis walk to an area off camera. A few minutes later, a gun shot can be heard off camera before a suspect walked away from where the gun shot was heard. The suspect appeared to be “tucking” a weapon in his waistband, according to an arrest report.
An anonymous tip to homicide detectives said the shooting was “over some money [expletive] and [Davis] had laughed about it when it wasn’t a joking matter,” the report stated. The tipper also identified the suspect by a nickname.
On Tuesday, Aug. 13, at around 12:30 a.m., a woman flagged down officers and told them her boyfriend, identified as Jaron Amey, 35, was holding two men hostage in a security booth and pointed a gun at her earlier in the night.
Amey goes by the same nickname given to police by the anonymous tip.
Officers heard Amey say “get over her or I’m going to kill this [expletive] through the woman’s phone, according to the report.
The woman told police that Amey accused her of “ratting him out” to the police and pointed a gun at her, forcing her into her car. She told police Amey wanted her to drive him out of state and said if she did not go with him, he would kill her and her kids, the report stated.
Eventually, the woman had to stop for gas. When Amey got out of the vehicle to fill the car, the woman drove away, fearing for her safety. When she got back to the apartment to pack her things, she received a call from her friend who is a security guard.
Over the phone, Amey told the woman to go to the security booth or he would shoot the man and his coworker, according to the report.
When officers arrived at the security booth, they found the two men, but Amey left the scene before they arrived.
The men told police that Amey pointed a gun at them and pistol whipped one of them to “prove he was serious.” According to the men, Amey heard a police helicopter flying overhead and ran from the scene.
Officers found Amey at an address found on a tax form in his vehicle. Police took him into custody on Aug. 13.
Amey told police that he was being set up by his girlfriend, saying she was “trying to get rid of him.” He also told police that Davis owed him some money from the night before.
Amey said Davis approached him and was “acting like he was coming at him.” He said he told Davis to back up “numerous times” and when Davis did not, Amey pulled out his gun and shot him, the report stated.
Police took Amey to the Clark County Detention Center where he faces the following charges:
- Open murder with the use of a deadly weapon
- Three counts of first-degree kidnapping
- Assault with the use of a deadly weapon
- Robbery with the use of a deadly weapon
- Battery with the use of a deadly weapon
Amey is held without bail. His next court appearance is scheduled for October 17.
