LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – Several families in need of help across the Las Vegas valley will receive a house full of furniture for Christmas.
It’s the 31st year of the Home for the Holidays program where Walker Furniture delivers to local families free furniture. The elves from Walker Furniture made their first of 30 stops on Wednesday at a home in the north part of the valley.
Mykaila Calhoun was the first one on their list of deserving families. She is a single mother of five who said she had left a domestic violence situation and is living in an apartment with no furniture. The delivery just a week before Christmas came as a complete surprise.
“I haven’t had furniture like this in so long. It’s amazing. You see my kids love it!” exclaimed Calhoun.
She was nominated by Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Officer Stephanie Ward who helped her along her journey. She’s helping set up a real Christmas tree donated by Star Nursery along with enough presents to fill the space underneath it.
“I wish I could help you guys the way you guys helped me,” Calhoun said.
“Giving is a part of the DNA of the Walker family. It is a part of us. We have been part of this community since 1955 and giving back to the community we operate in is at the core of who we are,” Jay Lee, President of Walker Furniture explained.
Las Vegas Rescue Mission, Las Vegas Metro Police, Star Nursery, and Walker Furniture all work together to make these deliveries happen.
They have 29 more stops to make before Christmas which means at least three deliveries a day for the next week.
