Begun as Kheng Hoe Heng Coffeeshop in 1919 the space at 67 Killiney Road is Singapore’s oldest existing Hainanese Coffeeshop, and although Killiney Kopitiam now boasts thirty locations throughout the country it is to the original that tourists and locals alike flock for an affordable meal from 06h00 until 18h00 daily.
Under the leadership of Woon Tien Yuan since 1992, he Woon Tek Seng and two other brothers still operating the original plus three others while franchisees manage the rest, guests arriving early can read about Killiney Kopitiam’s unique history while waiting for a table or take-out.
Priced similar to Hawker stands, a plate of Mee Goreng just S$5.00 while a substantial bowl of creamy Laksa costs just twenty-cents more, those seeking Hainanese signatures will find the fried Pork Chop commendable while Chai tow kway is a nice balance of sweet and salty thanks to dry Soy Sauce.
Liked by many for Curry Puffs, small but densely packed without a lot of oil, Bread comes as French Toast or topped with Butter and Sugar, but being in Singapore to “right” choice is wrapped around housemade Kaya.
