LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – A juvenile driver faces DUI charges after police said he fled from officers before hitting and killing a bicyclist, according to Nevada State Police.
The crash occurred on Jan. 15 shortly after 7:30 a.m. at the Lamb Boulevard and Stewart Avenue intersection in the northeast valley.
Las Vegas Metro police requested the help of Nevada State Police on the incident. The crash involved a Chrysler 300 that previously fled from a traffic stop that was conducted by Metro police.
According to Nevada State Police, the juvenile driver in the Chrysler was traveling northbound on Lamb Boulevard at a high rate of speed when it sideswiped a Mitsubishi Outlander and then continued north where it hit a Chevrolet Tahoe. After the impact, the Chevrolet and the Chrysler drove onto a sidewalk and struck a bicyclist. Both the bicyclist and the Chrysler then hit a brick wall before coming to a rest.
The driver of the Mitsubishi was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The juvenile driver and the driver of the Chevrolet were treated on-scene for minor injuries. The bicyclist was identified by police as Luis Sanchez Ochoa, 41, of Las Vegas and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following the impaired driving investigation on the juvenile driver, investigators with the Nevada State Police Traffic Homicide Unit booked the driver into the Juvenile Detention Center on the following charges.
- Stop required upon signal of a Peace Officer with death
- DUI resulting in death
- DUI with substantial bodily harm
- Reckless driving resulting in death
- Reckless driving resulting in substantial bodily harm
- Driving without a valid license
- Expired Registration
