LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Fire crews were working to suppress multiple lightning-ignited fires outside of Las Vegas in Mt. Charleston over the weekend.
The three fires are the Trough Springs Fire, the Jaybird Fire, and the Wilson 1 Fire., according to the U.S. Forest Service.
The Trough Springs Fire is located in the Wheeler Pass area northeast of Pahrump. The lightning-ignited fire was estimated at 100 acres on Sunday afternoon and was first reported around 1 p.m. Saturday.
Initially, fire crews dropped fire retardant to slow the fire’s progress and lessen the intense heat so that ground crews could approach the fire. According to the U.S. Forest Service, throughout the night the fire burned within the controlled area that was created by the retardant.
The Jaybird Fire, located northeast of Cold Creek in the Big Timber Spring area, was estimated at 32 acres as of Sunday. The fire was first reported around 3 p.m. Saturday and was contained and controlled as of Sunday.
The Wilson 1 Fire was located in the upper part of Lovell Canyon and was estimated at .25 acres. The lightning-ignited fire was first reported around 7 p.m. Friday and was contained and controlled as of Sunday.
The USDA Forest Service thanked the Clark County Fire Department, Pahrump Valley Fire & Rescue, Nye County Sheriff’s Office, Bureau of Land Management – Nevada, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Serive for their help containing the fires.
