Clark County’s Division of Air Quality has issued a dust advisory 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Tuesday as sustained winds of 25 miles per hour — with gusts topping 40 mph — are expected to sweep through the region.
The advisory urges residents and local construction sites to take precautions as blowing dust poses health risks for vulnerable populations.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency warns that people with heart or lung disease, older adults and children face greater risk from particulates, particularly when physically active, and may be better off staying indoors as much as possible during windy conditions.
Those with medical conditions that increase sensitivity to air pollution are advised to consult their physician.
Officials are offering the following tips to reduce dust exposure:
- Limit outdoor activity on windy days when dust is present
- Keep windows and doors closed and run air conditioning in both homes and vehicles to filter out particulates
- Check and replace indoor air filters if dirty
- Drive slowly on unpaved roads and avoid cutting across vacant lots
- Ride off-road vehicles only in approved areas outside the urban Las Vegas Valley
Residents can report excessive blowing dust from construction sites, vacant lots or other facilities by calling Environment and Sustainability’s dust complaint hotline at 702-385-DUST (3878).
