LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – Clark County is making some much-needed changes to a stretch of road in the east Las Vegas valley as chronic street racing continues to cause concerns.
Residents living near Hacienda Avenue and Lamb Boulevard told 8 News Now street racers have been known to drive up and down the road at all hours and have even been seen crashing into walls.
“They can smell the tire burning from the house,” Emmanuel Ortega shared what his parents have seen and heard while living nearby. “It is in the corner that sometimes they crash against the corner and they break the walls, a couple of times yeah.”
Other residents 8 News Now spoke to said the real fear is that someone will get hit and injured.
“I worry about people getting run over, walking their dogs in the evenings and the mornings,” Kimberly Taylor expressed.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said it is aware of the issue as they’ve installed security cameras on the corner of the intersection to catch the reckless drivers in the act.
Clark County’s Public Works Department also plans to cut into the asphalt at the intersection to make the spot less desirable for drifting. The public works office also noted that it plans to add speed cushions in each direction on Lamb Boulevard north of Hacienda Avenue to slow down drivers.
“Doing donuts is a madhouse over here,” Santiago Rivera who lives nearby said. “It’s crazy so the county stepping up for it, I’m glad to see that. Finally, we got something.”
Earlier in December, Clark County Commissioner Jim Gibson partnered with police and the public work’s team to host a meeting for community members to discuss the issues.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s Racing Apprehension Intervention Detail (RAID) was developed in 2022. The team was created due to the growing issue of illegal street racing across the valley. Those who would like to report an incident and send a video can do so by emailing RAID@LVMPD.com.
