LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – The Clark County School District Board of Trustees approved Thursday night paying out nearly $13 million to settle three lawsuits. However, one of those settlements is causing backlash.
One million dollars was awarded to the families of two students at Durango High School involved in an incident with a CCSD police officer.
The video showed the officer taking a student to the ground at Durango High in Feb. of 2023.
The district said that the footage shows no rights were violated.
Adam Levine, the general counsel for the Police Officer’s Association of the Clark County School District, told 8 News Now they’re disgusted by the settlement.
“To pay this kind of money when nothing wrong was done, absolutely boggles my mind,” Levine said. “The district should be ashamed of itself, and whoever made the decision to do this. Somebody should look at firing them.”
The ACLU of Nevada represented the two Durango High School students in the lawsuit. The group issued a statement Thursday night.
“CCSD has spent the last two years working to avoid accountability for attacking our clients,” ACLU Legal Director Chris Peterson said. “We hope tonight’s settlement will help our clients and their families on their way to healing and peace.”
