LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A Henderson man expressed shock Monday after he discovered more than 100 pounds of bread abandoned on his property with few hints as to from where the carb-laden load came.

Curtis Dennis was startled by the mysterious discovery, so he stuck a stick in it to make sure no one was killed and buried in it.

“It’s Las Vegas,” Dennis said. “They found bodies in barrels at the lake, maybe one was in the bread.”

Monday morning, a worker for PBF Manufacturing, a Henderson-based funeral casket supplier, came across the many loaves poured out of their boxes, still plastic wrapped and expired, sitting in the property’s large dumpster area.

The worker began recording his reaction to the pile, exclaiming that he wanted to find the culprit responsible and reprimand them with a wheat loaf, before calling his manager Curtis Dennis.

“I couldn’t imagine what happened,” he said. “I got a closer look, and it looked like some of it was moldy.”

Dennis noticed a Kroger Distribution label on the plastic wrap and called the company to find an answer.

“They just didn’t really know what was going on,” he said. “Couldn’t get a supervisor or anything.”

However, amid the pile Dennis found something better than sliced bread, a route document with a number and a name.

The Henderson Police Department responded to the scene taking the document with them, according to Dennis.

“There’s been illegal dumping at my place before,” he said. “I don’t know what I’m going to do with this bread, I can’t just take it to the dump, it’s food.”

Pigeons circled the dumpster area as 8newsnow.com crews recorded the mound Thursday. Some packages had rips and openings in them.

Following bread crumbs

Dennis was just breaking through the crust of the mystery, not deterred by his unsuccessful attempts with Kroger, he called his local Smith’s.

“I spoke to someone who acted like they were the manager, but they didn’t actually say who they were,” Dennis said. “They just kind of chuckled under their breath.”

The Smith’s representative on the phone told Dennis they couldn’t get a hold of anybody and said they didn’t know what to do.

Unfortunately, Dennis was no closer to figuring out where the bread came from and now, and still was no closer to getting rid of the doughy disarray.

“I tried to call Republic Waste Services because my trash delivery happened to be that day,” he said. “They have this recording on there that says, ‘This call may be monitored for training purposes,’ and I said, ‘Well you are going to want to record this one because this is quite a humorous story.’”

The Republic Waste Services representative laughed at his story and told Dennis disposal services would pick up the loaves that same day.

“The guys not only didn’t pick it up, but they took some of it out and threw it back into the pile,” he said.

On Thursday, Dennis said he hasn’t come up with a way to dispose of the pile of bread that was been molding since Monday.

City of Henderson responded for comment about what the municipal code is for improper disposal, a spokesperson said:

“It is considered illegal dumping and/or misuse of the trash receptacle. It is the responsibility of the property owner to clean up as it happened on their property. If there was evidence that another party is responsible, then it could be reported to the City. If the property owner does not clean it, they would be in violation of City code.”
