LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Millions of people, including those in Las Vegas, witnessed the blood moon total lunar eclipse, which began late Thursday night and ended early Friday morning.

If you missed the eclipse, 8 News Now captured the unique event so viewers who may have missed it can see it. It was the first total lunar eclipse in more than two years and was visible across the Americas and some parts of Africa, Europe, New Zealand and Russia.

The total eclipse took around six hours with totality lasting about an hour around midnight for the West Coast. Totality is when the entire moon falls within the darkest part of Earth’s shadow.

The eclipse is called the blood moon because of the reddish hue of its glow. Native Americans called it a worm moon because it occurs during spring when earthworms emerge from the ground.

The next total lunar moon eclipse will occur in March 2026.
