LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The mother of a Las Vegas man killed in an apartment fire on Sunday told 8 News Now her son was gone too soon and he will be dearly missed.
“I’ll never understand why such a beautiful, kind-hearted person, was taken so so soon,” Ronise Herrera said.
Her son Vincent Herrera, 23, and Kameron Moore, 24, died on Sunday after a blaze at the Riverbend Village Apartments. Four others were taken to the hospital for injuries, according to the Clark County Fire Department.
8 News Now first met Ronise Herrera and her husband Teddy on Monday, as they were looking for their son at Riverbend Village Apartments, which is located near Maryland Parkway and Flamingo Road.
“I’m just trying to find my son,” Ronise said at the time. “I’m just trying to find my baby.”
The Herrera’s eventually found Clark County Fire Chief John Steinbeck.
“I’m grateful. He told me he’s going to find, ‘your baby. I promise,’ and he did,” Ronise said. “Nobody had answers for me. I know you’re the first person I talked to and I was very grateful for your help,” she added.
Their concerns prompted firefighters to take another look inside Riverbend. Ronise and Teddy waited for hours on Monday as firefighters searched through debris.
“I stared at that building for hours until they took my baby out. [It’s] seared into my memory,” Ronise said.
Herrera and Moore were partners and Ronise said they had vacationed in the Grand Canyon in June. Moore lived in the complex.
Herrera was an artist who graduated from Las Vegas Academy in 2019 and loved his family dearly, including five brothers, Ronsie said.
“His smile, I even posted it on his birthday. He looks so happy in the video. His smile. I’m just going to miss it so much,” Ronise said.
One memory of Herrera she wanted to share was a poem he wrote as a kid.
“I remember part of it was like, ‘I know the world isn’t what I want it to be. But you know, maybe I could leave my mark.’ That was my baby,” she shared.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, according to CCFD.
