LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The job is posted online but there is no need to apply. There is only one candidate in mind for Nevada’s newest interim university president.
The Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) posted a summary of contract terms for Dr. Chris Heavey, UNLV’s Provost and the next interim president. This follows the sudden resignation of the former President Dr. Keith Whitfield on Mar. 3.
Records showed the base annual salary for the position is set at $540,000 and will be a part of a 3-year contract term. The pay comes with a few additional perks including an $8,000 car allowance, and an $18,000 housing allowance.
For comparison, Whitfield’s NSHE contract, which was approved in 2024, had his annual base salary set at $565,600 as part of a 4-year contract term.
Both the UNLV contracts pale when compared to the contract for University of Nevada, Reno President Brian Sandoval. His annual salary is set at $627,816 as part of a 4-year contract term.
Heavey can be considered for the top university job but only after one year as interim president, according to the NSHE contract terms.
