Welcome to This Week in Chinatown!
Spring is in full swing on Spring Mountain Road—literally and figuratively—with temps climbing into the low-to-mid 90s and the district buzzing with change. This week brings big transitions: Mr. BBQ and KARÉ Japanese Curry say farewell, but Harbor Seafood Hot Pot is stepping up as the first major dining anchor at the revamped XYZ² site (complete with that game-changing parking garage).
We’re spotlighting Claw World’s massive grand opening bash this Saturday—over $80,000 in prizes, lion dances, celebrity guests, and non-stop claw action that cements Chinatown as an entertainment destination, not just a food one. Don’t miss fresh deals at 99 Ranch and 168 to fuel your weekend feasts, another killer Sand Dollar Lounge lineup, the upcoming “Love You Madly” play at Las Vegas Little Theatre, and our look back at the Hui Lau Shan sign that kicked off mango fever.
We’re still griping about those left turns, light timers, and “Phase 2” delays, but the momentum is real—new energy, new openings, and warmer days ahead. Hit the plazas, snag some wins at Claw World, and share your stories with #ChinatownVegasVibes!

Neighborhood Shake-Ups & Fresh Arrivals on Spring Mountain
The corridor is in full flux this week—two beloved spots say goodbye while a major new player locks in at one of Chinatown’s most promising redevelopment sites.
Mr. BBQ Bids Farewell to Spring Mountain
The popular Korean barbecue destination, Mr. BBQ, has officially closed its doors at 4240 Spring Mountain Rd.
This 200-seat powerhouse was known for its high-energy “backyard BBQ” atmosphere, vibrant murals, and premium AYCE with a massive 17-variety banchan spread. While the brand continues expanding (including a big upcoming spot at Universal CityWalk in Los Angeles), its exit marks the end of an era for one of the district’s most social dining hubs.

KARÉ Japanese Curry Officially Closes
Shanghai Plaza has seen another quick shift: KARÉ Japanese Curry, famous for its signature “tornado” omurice, has closed.
The spot (previously long-time Yummy Rice) launched under Chef Jerry Jin late last year and built a fast following for its rich comfort food and stunning plating. The closure underscores the fierce competition in this high-traffic hub. The first-floor unit is now vacant—prime real estate like this rarely stays empty long in Shanghai Plaza.

BREAKING: First Major Restaurant Anchor Confirmed for XYZ²
The former Wells Fargo campus at Spring Mountain & Arville is officially landing its first big dining tenant: Harbor Seafood Hot Pot (揽季火锅).
Banners now cover the XYZ² complex, confirming an AYCE live-seafood hot pot experience on a large ground-floor space beneath the new Regus coworking offices. This premium hot pot concept taps into the district’s booming seafood trend.
The real game-changer? Patrons get access to the site’s rare subterranean and covered parking garage—huge relief from the usual plaza parking chaos.
This is the first major retail/dining milestone for the 75,000-sq-ft adaptive reuse project, signaling its shift into a key Chinatown culinary destination.
Harbor Seafood Hot Pot is announced as the first restaurant tenant for the XYZ Square(d) redevelopment on Spring Mountain Road.

Looking Back
Looking Back: The Sign That Started the Mango Fever 🥭
A look back at the time of Las Vegas Chinatown
Remember when we first saw this? 📸
Looking back at the archives this week, we’re revisiting the first physical sign that the legendary Hong Kong dessert king, Hui Lau Shan, was officially taking over the old Cafe No Fur spot in the Pacific Asian Plaza.
While this “Coming Soon” banner—with its bold red-and-yellow 許留留山 characters and excited “COMING SOON!!!!!!” text—was the first thing the general public spotted, chinatownvegas.com actually broke the news months earlier on October 21, 2022—long before the windows lit up on the second floor.
At the time, the storefront was still covered with remnants of the previous food court era: “Food Court” signage, listings for Almond Creamery, Amber’s Vegan, Dirty Little Vegan, Just Wing It, Karma Burger, K-Pop Bibimbap, and more—plus that cheeky “Cafe No Fur” arrow pointing to the curbside pickup. It’s wild to think this quiet, papered-up space was about to explode into the epicenter of Las Vegas’ mango sago craze.
Fast forward to today (after opening in 2023), and it’s hard to imagine Chinatown without those signature mango smoothies, pomelo sago, durian pancakes, and fresh fruit desserts drawing long lines of fans. Hui Lau Shan turned that second-floor corner into a must-visit sweet spot for locals and visitors alike.

Chinatown Gripes
😤 The Weekly Gripe: The “Phase 2” Waiting Game
It’s the same old story this week, and frankly, our patience is idling at a red light that refuses to change. Here’s what’s grinding our gears in the district:
The Left-Turn Menace
We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it until our voices are hoarse: Left turns out of the strip malls should be banned. Trying to cross multiple lanes of oncoming traffic just to head East isn’t just optimistic—it’s dangerous. It creates bottlenecks, near-misses, and a level of stress nobody needs before lunch. Redesign these exits or prohibit the turns—something has to give.
The “Phase 2” Purgatory
We’re repeatedly told relief is coming: lower speed limits, full repaving, smarter signals—all part of Phase 2 of the Inspiring Spring Mountain Redevelopment Plan. But why do we have to lose a hubcap in the meantime? Why these suspension-killing craters haven’t been patched as a temporary measure is beyond comprehension. “Planned for future repair” doesn’t help the alignment on your car today. Patch the worst offenders now—don’t wait for the full project to start.
Transit & Timing Nightmares
Then there’s the infrastructure logic—or lack thereof. We’re dealing with:
- Senseless Bus Stops: Pick-up spots placed in locations that defy all flow and reason—buses blocking lanes at busy intersections, turning transit into a traffic choke point.
- The World’s Worst Traffic Light Timers: How bad are they? We’re 100% certain that if the city just flipped the timers to the exact opposite of what they are now, traffic flow would instantly improve. Yes, they are that bad.
The Proof: Take one simple drive from Valley View Blvd all the way to Desert Breeze Park. It’s a gauntlet of red lights and unnecessary idling. We’ve griped about this for years, and yet, here we sit.
The Silver Lining (We Hope)
Clark County has confirmed Phase 2 is funded and moving forward—$12.5M for roadway transformation from Rainbow to Decatur, including repaving, smart tech, and safer speeds starting summer 2026. The Vegas Loop Chinatown station (at Boring Co.’s cost) could eventually bypass most of this surface chaos entirely. But “eventually” isn’t today. Let’s push for interim fixes—quick patches, temporary signal tweaks, left-turn restrictions—while the big plan cooks.
What drives you nuts most on Spring Mountain right now? The left turns? The lights? The potholes? Vent (constructively) or share your workaround in the comments—tag #ChinatownVegasVibes so we can amplify the fixes we all want!
