The outgoing chief executive of the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) is reportedly joining a new gambling-focused advisory law firm. Sky News first reported this possibility on Wednesday, and it raises questions about potential conflicts of interest, as he is still working at the regulator while a role is lined up at a commercial company.
Andrew Rhodes announced last month that he would step down from the position on April 30 after five years without providing specifics about his next move. Rumors of his new job have reportedly been doing the rounds in the gambling space.
In response to a request for comment from Sky News, a UKGC spokesperson said that Rhodes will be working “within the wider sector” and has been transparent with the regulator about his plans.
Rhodes will need to adhere to confidentiality rules
They said that Rhodes is no longer working on anything that could “present risks of a conflict of interest.” They went on to say that Rhodes will need to adhere to confidentiality rules and limits on his engagement with “matters connected to his previous responsibilities.”
The UKGC is still deciding on an interim chief executive. Deputy Chief Executive Sarah Gardner is taking over Rhodes’ responsibilities until a suitable candidate is found.
