Breaking News
Iconic Pho So 1 Closes After 31-Year Run in Chinatown
Sad news for pho lovers: Pho So 1, the beloved no-frills Vietnamese staple at 4745 Spring Mountain Rd (in the Spring Oaks Shopping Center at Spring Mountain & Decatur), has officially closed its doors permanently. First reported as temporarily shut for “intense repairs” back in November 2025, the latest update confirms this marks the end of a legendary 31-year legacy as one of Chinatown’s gold standards for traditional beef noodle soup (especially the classic Dac Biet).
After 31 years, the front doors of Pho So 1 remain locked with permanent closure notices following a month-long repair period.
Since opening in the early 1990s, Pho So 1 survived economic ups and downs, the 2020 pandemic, and more—serving multi-generational families with rich, authentic broths in a humble, reliable setting. It stood out from flashier newcomers as the spot where the quality spoke for itself.
The closure leaves a big vacancy in a prime location, and while international chains may eye the space, locals know nothing will fully replace those decades of memories over steaming bowls. The owners left a hopeful note hinting “We will be back,” possibly in a new concept or spot elsewhere—no details yet on a revival or replacement tenant.
Chinatown continues to evolve, but losing pioneers like this hits hard. Read the full story and stay tuned for updates here: Pho So 1 Closing: Iconic Las Vegas Chinatown Landmark Ends 31-Year Run

Chinatown Spotlight
Shining a light on the vibrant heart of Chinatown. Stay tuned for this week’s business spotlight!
This week, our Chinatown Spotlight shines on a true cultural cornerstone of our neighborhood: Las Vegas Little Theatre (LVLT).
Tucked away just off Spring Mountain Road on Schiff Drive, LVLT has been the beating heart of Southern Nevada’s community theater scene since 1978. Founded by Jack Bell and Jack Nickolson in a converted storefront, it remains the oldest operating small theater in the valley—proving that you don’t need a Strip-sized budget to deliver world-class drama, comedy, and storytelling.
Las Vegas Little Theater
Why We Love It
LVLT isn’t just a venue; it’s a true “for the community, by the community” institution. Whether you’re a lifelong theater buff or looking for a unique date night after a bowl of ramen nearby, LVLT offers an intimate, high-quality alternative to the massive residencies on Las Vegas Boulevard.
With three distinct performance spaces—the Main Stage, the Fischer Black Box, and the Studio Theatre—the venue provides a versatile platform for everything from Shakespearean tragedies to contemporary comedies and experimental new works. It’s the perfect spot to catch fresh, local talent up close in a cozy setting.
Get Involved
Thinking about trading your seat in the audience for a spot in the wings? LVLT is famous for its open-door policy for volunteers and actors. They frequently host open auditions (no experience required!) and offer educational workshops for those looking to learn the ropes of stagecraft. Right now, they’re gearing up for their upcoming production of Four Old Broads by Leslie Kimbell—a hilarious comedy/mystery running March 6–22, 2026—with auditions happening this week (Jan 5 & 6)!
Next time you’re exploring the neighborhood, take a quick detour to Schiff Drive. Support local art, experience incredible talent, and see why Las Vegas Little Theatre remains a crown jewel of the Chinatown community.

📍 Location: 3920 Schiff Dr, Las Vegas, NV 89103
🎟️ Tickets & Info: lvlt.org or call (702) 362-7996
🕒 Box Office Hours: Mon 4 PM–8 PM, Wed & Fri 10 AM–1 PM, Sat 9 AM–12 PM (check site for updates!)

Coming Soon: Chinatown’s Scene Heats Up
A vibrant gateway to what’s next — Chinatown Vegas prepares to unveil its newest additions.
2026 is kicking off with serious momentum in Las Vegas Chinatown! While major infrastructure projects (like the pedestrian walkway, Vegas Loop tunneling, and new retail plazas) continue to build excitement, several high-profile dining and entertainment spots are nearing launch. Here’s the latest on some of the most anticipated arrivals—many with signage up, remodels in progress, and openings just around the corner.
Sea Harbour by Chef Tony (5780 Spring Mountain Rd) – Opening Soon
One of the most anticipated arrivals in Chinatown, the famed “King of LA Dim Sum” is finally bringing his celebrated modern Cantonese seafood concept to Las Vegas. Expect showstopping dishes like succulent Peking duck, towering seafood platters, and exquisitely crafted dim sum staples such as har gow and siu mai. With the sleek glass façade complete and signage already installed (updates from mid-2025 onward show steady progress), all signs point to a grand opening just around the corner—set to make a major impact on the local dining landscape.
Hatoya Ryoyousha (八十八良葉舎) – First U.S. Location, Opening 2026
This iconic Kyoto-based matcha specialist has officially chosen Las Vegas Chinatown for its U.S. debut. Known for its meticulously sourced Uji matcha, the café will serve beautifully layered matcha lattes, limited seasonal creations, and refined desserts including Fresh Matcha Terrine and Half-Baked Matcha. “Coming Soon” signage has been in place since late 2025, and anticipation continues to build for this authentic Japanese tea experience that celebrates over 1,200 years of tea heritage.
Matcha Café Maiko (Hotai Plaza, next to Nabe Hotpot) – Opening Very Soon
The beloved Hawaiian-founded matcha café is gearing up to open its first Las Vegas location in Hotai Plaza. Renowned for its premium Japanese matcha and vibrant green desserts, Matcha Café Maiko is expected to deliver everything from soft serve and parfaits to expertly crafted matcha drinks. Licensing and early indicators from 2025 suggest an opening is imminent—perfect timing for a fresh, authentic matcha spot in the heart of Chinatown.
Mukgo Nolza (West of I-15, near The Sand Dollar Lounge) – 21 Themed Karaoke Rooms, Targeting 2026
From restaurateur Peter Vu comes one of Chinatown’s most ambitious entertainment concepts yet. Mukgo Nolza will feature 21 private, high-design karaoke rooms inspired by sci-fi and fantasy themes—think Galaxy, Spiderman, and beyond—paired with elevated Asian cuisine. Bold exterior signage has been up for a while, and while an earlier 2025 timeline was floated, the project is now pacing toward a 2026 debut—promising a mind-bending blend of dining and nightlife.
Shin-Sen-Gumi Yakitori (4810 Spring Mountain Rd) – Aiming for Early 2026
The cult-favorite Japanese izakaya chain from California is still set to land in Chinatown, bringing its signature charcoal-grilled yakitori, classic rice bowls, and energetic late-night pub atmosphere. While the opening has faced some delays (as noted in 2025 updates), momentum remains strong, with an early 2026 launch now in sight—adding more authentic Japanese pub energy to the corridor.
These spots highlight Chinatown’s ongoing evolution: from world-class dim sum and premium matcha to innovative nightlife. Keep an eye on chinatownvegas.com for the latest updates as these openings unfold!

Looking Back
A look back at the time of Las Vegas Chinatown
Emperor’s Garden at Chinatown Plaza
Before the vibrant neon glow of modern hot pot chains took over, Emperor’s Garden stood as a steadfast anchor on the second floor of the historic Chinatown Plaza (4215 Spring Mountain Rd., Las Vegas, NV 89102). Since the plaza’s opening in 1995—marking the birth of Las Vegas’ iconic Chinatown district—this restaurant served as a beloved “go-to” for locals, families, and tourists craving authentic, moderately priced Chinese cuisine in a welcoming, no-frills setting.
A Legacy of Sichuan and Cantonese Flavors
Emperor’s Garden was cherished for its extensive, versatile menu that bridged bold regional styles and everyday comforts. It was one of the district’s long-standing spots for Sichuan specialties, delivering the fiery, numbing heat that has since defined much of Spring Mountain Road’s culinary scene. Favorites included classics like mapo tofu, honey walnut shrimp, and hearty dim sum-style breakfasts (think sao bing, you tiao, and dou jiang soy milk) that made it a morning staple for many. The kitchen nailed that perfect balance of tradition and reliability—ideal for family gatherings, weekend lunches, or a quick, satisfying meal after a night out.

The End of an Era
Like many legacy businesses, Emperor’s Garden faced tough challenges during the global pandemic and ultimately closed its doors permanently in the COVID-19 era (several years ago, with the space sitting vacant for a while). Its departure marked the close of a multi-decade chapter, standing alongside other pioneers like Capital Seafood as part of the original soul of Chinatown Plaza.
The New Chapter: Shoo Loong Kan
The space didn’t stay empty for long. After a major remodel, the second-floor spot reopened in August 2025 as Shoo Loong Kan (小龙坎火锅), a world-famous Sichuan-style hot pot chain known for its authentic, soulful broths (from mild to blazing spicy), fresh ingredients, and trendy, high-energy vibe. While the cozy, built-from-scratch feel of Emperor’s Garden has given way to sleek modern design and communal hot pot tables, the transition keeps this prime location buzzing as a must-visit for authentic Chinese flavors—proving Chinatown’s evolution is all about honoring roots while embracing the new.
A perfect reminder: Chinatown Plaza, now nearly 30 years strong, continues to adapt and thrive. What are your memories of Emperor’s Garden? Share them with #ChinatownVegasVibes!
Chinatown Gripes
How many more “Breaking News” alerts do we need to see before the city realizes that Spring Mountain Road has become a death trap?
This week’s major crash at the intersection of Spring Mountain and Decatur Boulevard—which forced lane closures and sent more residents to the hospital—is just the latest entry in a long, bloody ledger. For those of us who live, work, and eat in Chinatown, these headlines aren’t just traffic updates; they are a constant reminder that our safety is being ignored in favor of “traffic flow.”
The reality is that Spring Mountain is no longer just a thoroughfare to the Strip; it is one of the most densely populated pedestrian districts in Las Vegas. We have grandmothers crossing the street to buy groceries, tourists navigating unfamiliar blocks for late-night ramen, and students walking to the bus. Yet, we are treating this stretch like a high-speed bypass.
The speed limit MUST be reduced (currently posted around 45 mph, but often felt much faster). Currently, the posted speeds (and the even higher speeds drivers actually reach) are fundamentally incompatible with a vibrant commercial district. When a crash happens at Spring Mountain and Decatur, the impact isn’t just felt by the cars involved—it ripples through our entire community, paralyzing our businesses and endangering everyone on the sidewalk.
We don’t need “investigations” or temporary orange cones. We need a permanent reduction in the speed limit and real traffic-calming measures. It’s time to stop prioritizing how fast people can drive through Chinatown and start prioritizing the people who are actually in Chinatown.
And while we’re at it:
- Fix those relentless potholes that turn every drive into a dodgeball game—especially the ones that keep reappearing like they own the road.
- Ban those chaotic left turns out of strip malls that back everything up and turn simple exits into gridlock nightmares.
- Correct bus stops and pickups that block lanes and create hazards for everyone.
- Adjust traffic light timers so they actually sync up instead of trapping us in endless red-light purgatory.
Chinatown deserves better than constant close calls and “Breaking News” crashes. Share your gripes (or fixes) with #ChinatownVegasVibes — maybe the city will finally listen! 🚦💥
