Breaking News

We Broke It: The Huge New Mall is Confirmed!

Remember that tantalizing but unconfirmed news we broke in our December 1st issue of This Week in Chinatown about a huge new retail development coming to the heart of the corridor?

Well, now it’s official!

Vacant lot and gravel parking area with graffiti-covered wall on Pioneer Avenue, Las Vegas Chinatown, rumored site for a new mall development.

The Pioneer Avenue entrance to a large, undeveloped lot in the Las Vegas Chinatown area. This property is the site for the new Jade Prominade. It will be the location of a major new retail and entertainment plaza.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal (RJ) recently followed up, reporting that developer Ali Kaveh is moving ahead with plans for a major new retail complex tentatively named Jade Promenade. The $40 million project, slated for Spring Mountain Road and Pioneer Ave between Wynn Road and Valley View Blvd, is planned to be a sprawling 73,000-square-foot shopping center. They even detailed the proposed second phase: a neighboring 150-unit apartment complex.

While the RJ is now getting the word out, remember you heard the buzz about this significant new addition to the Spring Mountain landscape right here first.

Keep checking Chinatownvegas.com for continued exclusive updates on the Jade Promenade and all other breaking development news that truly impacts Las Vegas’ Chinatown.

Chinatown Scavenger Hunt Brings the Community Out in Force

Community members gather during the 12/13/25 Chinatown Scavenger Hunt with Minja Yan, Clark County Commissioner candidate, highlighting civic engagement and local businesses along Spring Mountain Road.

Saturday’s Chinatown Scavenger Hunt with Minjia Yan was a major success, drawing families, locals, and first-time visitors into the heart of Las Vegas Chinatown for a fun, interactive afternoon of exploration. Participants crisscrossed multiple plazas, discovering hidden gems, engaging directly with local business owners, and experiencing the neighborhood far beyond a single stop.

The free, community-driven event did exactly what it set out to do: drive meaningful foot traffic to small businesses, introduce new audiences to Chinatown’s depth and diversity, and reinforce the area as a walkable, vibrant cultural destination. From longtime supporters of Chinatown to newcomers seeing it with fresh eyes, the energy throughout the corridor was undeniable. The winner was Las Vegas’ Zusqueohnna Yates, pictured below with her prize

Events like this continue to show how thoughtful, grassroots programming can create real impact for Chinatown — not just for a day, but for long-term community connection and economic support.

🚨 Massive Pivot at Golden Spring Plaza: Mimi Dam Out, 888 Group In for Major Expansion

LAS VEGAS, NV – In a stunning turn of events for Spring Mountain Road, the long-anticipated arrival of Mimi Dam at the Golden Spring Plaza (5865 Spring Mountain Rd) is reportedly off the table.

While our previous reports suggested the Korean traditional concept was finally moving forward with a consolidation of Suites 140 and 145, new sources indicate a major shift in the lineup. Instead of Mimi Dam, the powerhouse 888 Group—the team behind the wildly successful 888 Japanese BBQ and 888 Korean BBQ—is set to take over the massive footprint.

Exterior of a one-story commercial building in Chinatown, Las Vegas, under a blue sky, currently housing Jongno Chicken and a Japanese BBQ, identified as the future location of Mimidam.

The commercial building in Chinatown, Las Vegas, that is slated to become the future home of 888 Sushi and Robata.

🍣 The 888 Empire Grows
The 888 Group is reportedly planning to launch a combined 888 Sushi, Robata, and Yakiniku concept in the space formerly home to Jong-Ro Chicken and Shin Yakiniku.

This move would represent a significant homecoming of sorts for the group, which already dominates the Chinatown BBQ scene. By bringing their popular Sushi and Robata concept (currently thriving on Paradise Rd) directly into the heart of the Golden Spring Plaza, they are poised to create a one-stop destination for Japanese-style grilled meats and high-end sushi.

😶 Management Stays Quiet
The transition remains shrouded in some mystery. This Week in Chinatown reached out to both Mimi Dam management and the 888 Group for official confirmation on the lease transfer and the fate of the Mimi Dam brand in Las Vegas.

As of press time, neither group has responded to our requests for comment.

🔍 What This Means for You
The loss of Mimi Dam—a concept that has been teased since 2019—will surely disappoint fans of traditional Korean gourmet soups and noodles. However, the arrival of an established local favorite like 888 suggests that the vacant “ghost” suites in Golden Spring Plaza will finally see life again, likely with the high-energy, high-quality “All You Can Eat” experience the 888 Group is known for.

We are digging deeper into this developing story. Is Mimi Dam looking for a new home, or has the project been shelved for good?

Stay tuned as we continue to track this huge announcement! 🥢

Culinary Union Local 226 & The Citizenship Project

This week, our spotlight shines brightly on a cornerstone of the Las Vegas community: the Culinary Workers Union Local 226. While they are well-known for representing and fighting for hospitality workers across Southern Nevada, their impact extends far beyond the workplace through their incredible Citizenship Project.

Who is Culinary Union Local 226?
The Culinary Union is the largest affiliate of UNITE HERE in Nevada, representing over 60,000 workers in the casino and hospitality industry. These are the people who make Las Vegas run—the housekeepers, porters, bartenders, cooks, servers, and more—many of whom are immigrants and refugees who come to the U.S. seeking a better life.

The Citizenship Project: Making Dreams a Reality
The Culinary Union’s Citizenship Project is a powerful, non-profit initiative dedicated to helping legal permanent residents in Nevada navigate the complex and often expensive process of becoming U.S. citizens.

Their efforts include:

  • Free Legal Assistance: Providing free representation for the naturalization application process.
  • Citizenship Classes: Offering free classes to prepare applicants for the civics and English tests.
  • Financial Aid: Helps to cover the high cost of USCIS application fees, which can be a significant barrier for low-wage workers.

Their mission is a direct investment in the Las Vegas community, empowering thousands of immigrants—including many in and around Chinatown—to fully participate in American society.

How You Can Support
One fantastic way to help is by purchasing a specialty license plate! Funds raised go directly to The Citizenship Project, ensuring they can continue their life-changing work.

Community Corner

Highlighting the people and places that make our Chinatown special.

From Las Vegas Chinatown to a National Style Icon

Here in the heart of the Spring Mountain Corridor, we love celebrating businesses that have grown up with our community—and few stories shine as bright as that of Feature (Feature.com). What started as a modest storefront right here has exploded into a nationally recognized destination for sneaker culture, high-end apparel, and cutting-edge design.

It all began in 2010 at 3735 W. Spring Mountain Rd., where four local entrepreneurs created a space that merged fashion, music, art, and sneaker culture. The original Chinatown location—with its iconic “sneaker tunnel”—became the cultural hub that launched everything.

Today, Feature has expanded to the Wynn Plaza Shops, Calabasas, Scottsdale, and soon La Jolla, CA—while staying true to the community that started it all.

Stop by the original store at 3735 W. Spring Mountain Rd., #205, and see where a Chinatown dream turned into a national powerhouse.

Looking Back

A look back at "vintage" Chinatown

Mike’s Shoe Repair

Tucked into the busy heart of Spring Mountain Road, in the Cathey Hill mall where the scent of restaurants drifts from nearby and neon signs glow in many languages, sits one of Chinatown’s quietest but most enduring fixtures: Mike’s Shoe Repair.

For decades, this little shop has been a sanctuary of craftsmanship in a world that often treats belongings as disposable. Regular customers say Mike doesn’t just fix shoes—he restores memories: boots worn through adventures, handbags passed down from grandmothers, work shoes that have carried someone through countless shifts.

Chinatown has evolved rapidly, but Mike’s remains a steady presence—reflecting the hardworking immigrant spirit and community loyalty that give this neighborhood its soul.

This week, we look back with appreciation at a business that quietly stitches together not just shoes, but the stories of the people who walk through its door.

📣 Chinatown Updates: Addressing Flow and Safety Concerns

The Spring Mountain Road corridor is essential to our community, but recurring issues continue to impact drivers and pedestrians. We’re highlighting these points to encourage productive dialogue with local authorities.

  • Spring Mountain Road Speed Limit Review – Re-evaluate to better match the dense, pedestrian-heavy urban character.
  • Road Surface Conditions and Potholes – Expedite interim repairs (especially Decatur to Jones) until the 2026 repaving.
  • Challenges with Left Turns out of Malls – Explore better exit strategies or signage to reduce congestion.
  • Traffic Light Coordination – Optimize timing for smoother flow during peak hours.
  • Bus Stop Accessibility – Review placements to shorten walks to plaza entrances.

We remain committed to a safe, enjoyable corridor for everyone. Let’s keep the conversation going!
