🏙️ Community Corner

Community corner logo

Highlighting the people and places that make our Chinatown special.

This week, we’re sparking a conversation about the future of Chinatown’s Spring Mountain Corridor. Join us in envisioning what’s next for a prime piece of real estate in our vibrant district!

The Next Chapter: What Should Fill the Former Starbucks Space in Chinatown?

LAS VEGAS, NV – The recent closure of a Starbucks location in the bustling Chinatown district—part of the company’s nationwide restructuring—has created a rare and exciting opportunity for a local business to snag some prime real estate. This vacant storefront, situated on a high-traffic corner, is an ideal canvas for a business that combines speed and convenience with authentic, innovative Asian cuisine that defines our community.

We’re launching a community thought experiment to dream up the perfect concept for this space. The location’s infrastructure, designed for high-volume transactions, makes it ideal for quick, quality service. Here are our top two ideas to inspire you:

The Drive-Thru Boba Lab

The Concept: A high-end, artisan boba and tea shop designed for drive-thru service.

The Offer: Go beyond standard milk tea with innovative flavors like premium Matcha lattes, seasonal Ube concoctions, and authentic fruit teas—all handed off through the window for a quick caffeine and dessert fix.

The Drive-Up BĂĄnh MĂŹ & Coffee Bar

The Concept: A hyper-efficient Vietnamese eatery focusing on Bånh MÏ sandwiches and Cà Phê Sᝯa Đå (Vietnamese Iced Coffee).

The Offer: Fresh, daily-baked baguettes filled with crispy, savory Vietnamese delights, paired with a powerful, sweet iced coffee for a high-quality, fast-casual meal.

What to Expect:

  • A chance to shape Chinatown’s culinary landscape.
  • A focus on businesses that honor the area’s cultural identity.
  • An opportunity for locals and visitors to enjoy innovative, on-the-go dining.

When and Where:

  • Date: Ongoing discussion through October 2025.
  • Time: Share your ideas anytime on our social channels.
  • Location: Former Starbucks space, Spring Mountain Corridor, Las Vegas, NV 89102.

Support:

The redevelopment of the Spring Mountain Corridor is underway, emphasizing walkability and mixed-use projects. A drive-thru/drive-up concept here would serve both locals commuting to work and tourists making a quick stop.

What concept do you think is best? Join the discussion on our social channels and help map the next great culinary landmark in Las Vegas Chinatown with #ChinatownVegas, #DriveThruBoba, #BanhMiVegas, #NextChapterLV, and #SupportLocal!

📜 Looking Back: Shaanxi Gourmet’s Hand-Pulled Legacy 🍜

By Chinatown Historian

Storefront of Shaanxi Gourmet, showing the sign, entry doors, and red Chinese lanterns

A familiar sight from the past: the entrance to Shaanxi Gourmet, lit by an overhead bulb and flanked by traditional red lanterns, before it closed its doors.

It’s been over a decade since the terracotta warriors stood guard at the entrance of Shaanxi Gourmet on South Jones Boulevard, but ask any Chinatown veteran about the restaurant, and their eyes light up with a craving for the bold, wheat-centric cuisine of Northwest China.

Shaanxi Gourmet, which closed its doors in 2013, was a true gem that helped define the authenticity of Las Vegas’s burgeoning Chinatown. Unlike the Cantonese or Szechuan flavors that dominated the scene, Shaanxi Gourmet brought the rustic, soul-warming flavors of Xi’an.

A Taste of Xi’an in Las Vegas

If you were a regular, you knew the staples by heart:

  • Biang Biang Mian: Wide, thick, and chewy hand-pulled noodles, often served with chili oil, garlic, and vinegar. These “belt noodles” were the star of the show—long enough to be a scarf and impossible to eat gracefully.
  • Rou Jia Mo (Chinese “Burger”): The ultimate street food. This was savory, minced, cumin-spiced meat (often pork or lamb) stuffed into a crispy, unleavened flatbread. It was simple, succulent, and utterly addictive.
  • Yangrou Paomo: A dish where you played a part! You’d tear pieces of unleavened bread into a bowl, which was then doused with a rich, fragrant lamb soup and finished with translucent rice noodles. It was hearty, comforting, and perfect on a cool Vegas evening.

The Shaanxi Lamb Rou Jia Mo. Braised for hours in rich, aromatic spices and served hot.

Shaanxi Gourmet wasn’t just a local spot; it was a sister restaurant to the similarly authentic and highly-praised Shaanxi Gourmet in the San Gabriel Valley near Los Angeles, adding to its reputation as a must-visit destination for those seeking genuine regional Chinese food.

The Impact

While the restaurant is gone, its legacy lives on. Shaanxi Gourmet helped lay the foundation for the diverse, regional Chinese dining we enjoy today in Chinatown. It proved that Las Vegas diners craved authenticity, paving the way for the wave of specialized noodle and dumpling houses that followed.

Next time you pass that corner on South Jones, pause to remember the time when a taste of the ancient Chinese city of Xi’an was just a quick drive away. It was a brief but flavorful chapter in our neighborhood’s history that we won’t soon forget. Share your Shaanxi Gourmet memories with #ChinatownVegasVibes and #ChinatownHistory!

😤 Chinatown Gripes: Nothing Changes

Another week, and the list of core frustrations in the Chinatown area remains tragically the same. We repeat these gripes not out of boredom, but out of desperation. These aren’t minor inconveniences; they are significant safety hazards and traffic bottlenecks that detract from the entire experience of visiting this vibrant district. We need larger voices and more influential platforms to pick up this torch because, on the ground, the status quo is becoming unacceptable.

The Ferocious Potholes

The potholes are no longer simple road imperfections; they are craters that actively damage vehicles. Driving through the area feels like navigating a poorly maintained off-road course. The city must implement a comprehensive, long-term road repair plan rather than relying on temporary patch jobs that fail within weeks. These aren’t just an aesthetic issue; they are a liability and a source of constant, costly car repairs for drivers.

Horrible Traffic Light Timers

The timing of the traffic lights remains illogical and frustrating. It often feels as though the lights are programmed to maximize congestion, not to manage it efficiently. Drivers are forced to wait an excessive amount of time at major intersections, only to be stopped again almost immediately. This poor synchronization creates unnecessary idling, exacerbates air quality issues, and contributes to the aggressive driving that plagues the area.

Poorly Placed Bus Stops and Pickup/Drop-off Spots

The current layout of bus stops and ride-share/taxi pickup spots is a major contributor to the district’s traffic chaos. These spots are frequently located in a way that forces stopping traffic to block entire lanes, especially during peak dining and shopping hours. There is a critical need to designate dedicated, off-street loading and unloading zones that do not impede the flow of through-traffic.

The Speed Limit is Too High

The current speed limit along the main thoroughfares is entirely too fast for a high-density area with heavy foot traffic and numerous business entrances. Lowering the speed limit would dramatically increase pedestrian safety and provide drivers with the necessary reaction time to navigate the frequent sudden stops and turns. The area should prioritize human safety and accessibility over the speed of vehicle travel.

Prohibit Left Turns Out of Malls

One of the most dangerous and traffic-jamming moves is the attempt to make a left turn out of the numerous mall and plaza parking lots onto the main street. These maneuvers routinely stop two or three lanes of traffic dead. A simple, effective solution is to prohibit all left turns out of these complexes, forcing drivers to make a safe right turn and use designated, signalized turn-around points further down the road. This change would immediately reduce accidents and dramatically improve traffic flow.

We scream this every week in hopes that someone with a larger voice and a larger audience picks it up. These aren’t just complaints; they are a plea for a safer, more navigable Chinatown Vegas. Share your thoughts and solutions with #ChinatownVegasVibes and #ChinatownVoice!
