The Golden Tiki’s Backstreet Boys Headshrinking Extravaganza
On Sunday, July 27, 2025, The Golden Tiki in Las Vegas Chinatown turned up the heat with a semi-secret headshrinking ceremony for the Backstreet Boys! Around 2 p.m., Nick Carter, Brian Littrell, and AJ McLean were greeted by dozens of fans who caught wind of the event, announced just hours prior. The tiki bar unveiled custom-made shrunken heads of all five Backstreet Boys, adding them to a legendary collection honoring Vegas icons like Vince Neil, Sammy Hagar, and Carrot Top.
Over 250 heads have been dedicated since The Golden Tiki opened in 2015, and this event was a true Chinatown moment! Fans sipped on seven exclusive Backstreet Boys-themed tiki cocktails (with non-alcoholic options) available through their Sphere residency, ending August 24, 2025. Visit The Golden Tiki at 3939 Spring Mountain Rd for a taste of this star-studded vibe!

Chinatown Gripes & Community Voices 🚦
Chinatown Gripes: When Graffiti Crosses the Line
We fully recognize that graffiti can be a powerful form of street art when it’s done with purpose, creativity, and respect. But there’s a difference between art and outright vandalism. This week, 1004 Cafe in Kangnam Square, a beloved new addition to Chinatown, had its sign defaced—not with a mural or meaningful design, but with a crude tag that destroyed the storefront’s visibility. It’s especially frustrating given that this space has seen several restaurant and concept changes over the years.
Every new business that moves in, such as 1004 Cafe, is trying to build something from scratch, and having their signage defaced before they even gain traction is a significant setback. This isn’t an expression. It’s not rebellion. It’s just destructive. Chinatown thrives when our businesses are visible, welcoming, and respected. Let’s keep the art where it belongs—not on the signs that entrepreneurs rely on to be seen. Have thoughts on this? Tag us @ChinatownVegas—or better yet, tag something meaningful, not a small business.
Keep an eye on chinatownvegas.com and share your thoughts with #ChinatownVegas!

Major Development Update: Pearl Mixed-Use Project Breaks Ground This Fall
Chinatown’s skyline is set to evolve yet again. Fore Property Company has officially announced that construction will begin this November on Pearl, a new 380-unit mixed-use apartment complex in Chinatown. This ambitious project, located on a 10.5-acre site along Valley View Blvd. and Procyon Street, was originally approved in January and sold in May for $24.2 million. The site, previously owned by HMV Group, currently houses several vacant buildings, but that will soon change.
Project Highlights:
– 380 residential units: 64 studios, 255 one-bedrooms, 49 two-bedrooms, and 12 three-bedrooms
– 32,600 square feet of commercial space
– Residential units to rise above retail on floors 4–6
– Designed by Perlman Architects, with Silver Lands Inc. handling landscape architecture
– Zoning representation by Kaempfer Crowell
The Pearl project marks a major step in Chinatown’s transformation into a walkable, modern district with a strong blend of culture, dining, and now, elevated residential living. ChinatownVegas Insight: With the Vegas Loop expanding nearby and Chinatown11 also moving forward, this project may tie into the broader transit-oriented development push happening throughout the district. Stay tuned as we continue to monitor progress and preview the retail concepts that may call Pearl home.

First Look: Shanghai Plaza Expansion

A first look at the architectural rendering for the upcoming Shanghai Plaza extension. Image credit: Yihong Liu Associates.
We are excited to bring you the first look at the Shanghai Plaza extension that’s coming soon!
The rendering shows a new two-story building with a red brick facade and arched windows on the second floor. The ground floor appears to have multiple storefronts with large glass windows and prominent “SIGNAGE” placeholders. There will also be multi-level parking, which is much needed.
Rumour has it that a fine watch shop will open featuring high-end watches at wholesale pricing. The space will be spruced up with a few trees and bushes planted along the sidewalk. The building’s design features classical architectural elements, including decorative balustrades and cornices. The rendering is credited to YIHONG LIU ASSOCIATES.
We will be following and updating on this exciting development to this week’s update on ChinatownVegas.com.
