Suspects opened fire on Metro Police officers late Sunday night while they were conducting a follow-up investigation into an earlier drive-by shooting, according to police.
The incident occurred around 10:39 p.m. near West Lone Mountain Road and Scott Robinson Boulevard, where officers were investigating a drive-by shooting that had taken place around 5 a.m. Sunday in the 5100 block of Hickam Avenue.
During their investigation, officers spotted two vehicles they believed were connected to the early Sundayshooting. As police began following the vehicles, occupants inside opened fire on the officers, striking two patrol cars, police said.
One officer returned fire before the suspects fled, police said.
Additional police units responded, and both suspect vehicles were located. All occupants of the vehicles were detained without further incident, police said. The number of occupants and their ages were not given.
In a video statement, Metro Capt. Esmeralda Boveda said that two individuals in the fleeing vehicles suffered gunshot wounds and were transported to hospitals — one with nonlife-threatening injuries and another who was listed in critical condition.
No officers were injured, Boveda said.
The incident Sunday night was the department’s fourth officer-involved shooting of 2025.
