LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Nevada wildlife officials said this week that a man was fined $5,000 and ordered to pay $738 in court costs for poaching a trophy-class bull elk inside Great Basin National Park.
The man, who was not identified in a news release from the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW), pleaded guilty in March to possession of an unlawfully harvested big game animal, a gross misdemeanor. He received a suspended sentence and placed on 12 months probation.
The elk was shot on Nov. 9, 2022, reported by “multiple concerned member of the public,” NDOW said. An investigation found the animal was killed more than a half-mile inside the park boundaries. Great Basin is off-limits to all hunting.
An unidentified woman who was also charged in the incident had a valid Nevada elk tag, according to NDOW. She pleaded guilty/no contest in May 2024 to a charge of hunting in a closed area, and was fined $415.
As part of the investigation, NDOW seized the elk’s antlers with the skull attached, its skinned cape, and the remaining processed meat.
