LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The Giving Store is more than just a thrift boutique in the Las Vegas valley it’s a nonprofit dedicated to supporting domestic violence survivors.
Since taking over as president in 2019, Dian Hodge has led the organization in its mission to make a meaningful impact.
“We chose the Giving Store to support Safe House, we also support Living Grace, which is a home for unwed mothers,” Hodge said. “When you come in, it’s like a treasure hunt. You’re looking for a pair of designer jeans, and then you find a cup or saucer that belonged to your grandmother.”
Beth Flory is the CEO of Safe House, a local domestic violence emergency shelter.
“We have an amazing relationship with the Giving Store, not only do we get a large portion of their proceeds from their sales, but we also are able to send our clients here to shop for free,” Flory said.
The Safe House offers a 24-hour crisis hotline, an emergency shelter, and dedicated advocates to assist with court matters and temporary protective orders. Additionally, they provide outreach education and counseling services.
People escaping from a dangerous situation often leave their homes empty-handed, and they can shop for everything they need at the Giving Store.
Shoppers like John McKay and Nicholas Delaney said they are not only looking for good deals but also shopping for a good cause.
“It’s always nice to feel like you’re doing something for the community that you live in,” McKay said. “Dian and the folks here at the Giving store are amazing, and Nick and I are both flight attendants for Southwest Airlines, and I try to bring in all the toiletries I don’t use in the hotel overnights, and they give them away to the folks that need them as well.”
Donations also come from hotels and businesses, providing high-end goods.
“I saw a couple of things that can go in my house right now, so I’m feeling really good about everything,” Delaney said. “I had to keep myself contained. I only got a few things today, but we’ll see about next week.”
The Giving Store is located just off East Lake Mead Parkway and Boulder Highway.
Store hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Donations are accepted during the same days from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Donations can be dropped off behind the building, next to the white trailer.
