LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Beyond the Strip, Las Vegas has a lot of history and on Monday, the Nevada Legislature will hear a proposal to make what’s commonly known as the “Fruit Loop” a historic landmark in the valley.
Located in the central valley, off Paradise and Naples, the block is known for having served the LGBTQ+ community for decades with prominent gay bars like Piranha, Quadz and Gypsy Nightclub. The idea of the name change came from UNLV graduate turned State Senator, Fabian DoƱate.
The term “Fruit Loop” was once considered a derogatory term to describe the queer community but is now being reclaimed and used in a positive light as an official name for the area.
Raul Mangubat is the co-owner of “Get Booked,” a legendary bookstore turned merchandise haven, which has been on the block for over 30 years. He said with everything going on in the world right now, it’s nice to feel recognized for something good.
“We are very glad about that news and it’s about time because just like any other community we have a presence here in Las Vegas and we are finally being acknowledged,” he shared with 8 News Now.
The Center’s Health Equity and Advocacy Program Manager Albert Sedano was proud that his fellow classmate is making such strides to enhance the area.
“State Senator Donate and I used to go to UNLV together and study public health so it’s wild to see how our paths have crossed again. It’s so special to acknowledge the fact that oftentimes there aren’t a lot of queer spaces for people like us,” Sedano shared.
In addition to the official name change and title, another goal of Donate is to add more crosswalks and lighting, making it a safer, more walkable space for all.
Those who work nearby, like Giovanni Arocho hope to see more development soon.
“I feel like putting gay-owned restaurants in this area or even a coffee shop somewhere would be great. It’s needed,” Arocho added.
The bill’s hearing is scheduled for Monday at the Nevada Legislature.
