LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A convicted sex offender who left the country while on parole more than 17 years ago is back in custody, according to the U.S. Marshals Service in Nevada.
Robert Sturgiss was arrested on Dec. 13 in Rosarito, Mexico, by Mexican Immigration Officials and turned over to the U.S. Marshal’s Service at the Mexican border in San Diego the same day. Sturgiss was extradited to Nevada on Dec. 20.
Sturgiss was convicted on a sexual assault charge on Nov. 12, 1991, according to a news release. The case involved illegal sexual contact with a 13-year-old victim. Sturgiss was deemed a present and future danger to the community at his sentencing, and he received a sentence of five years to life in prison.
Sturgiss was granted parole in May 2005, and became the subject of a fugitive investigation in July 2007.
He was in custody in the Clark County Detention Center on Dec. 20, but jail records indicate he is no longer at the facility.
