LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The holidays are all about being around your loved ones. A perfect example is watching classics at local community theaters as it is an opportunity for everyone to engage in the arts and culture. A local theater company is tapping into that holiday spirit to get people to come out and support.
Signature Productions and Broadway Stage Collective are putting on a nostalgic performance of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens which will be playing at the Summerlin Library through December 22. The story follows Ebenezer Scrooge who dislikes Christmas but after some ghostly visits, the grumpy old man eventually embraces it.
Joey DiBenedetto plays Scrooge and those in attendance will also see two child characters that represent want and ignorance.
“It’s an unbelievable journey and a story that happens in an hour and 30 minutes that most people don’t get their whole lives,” he said.
He hopes more people can be part of community theatre.
“Anybody can go see online, this is something that is meant for the community,” DiBenedetto added.
It’s where culture and the arts meet.
“It can be every bit as professional as anything you would see on the strip,” Director Jennifer Hemme said, urging the need for community support.
According to the American Association of Community Theatre, seats at some community theatres need to be filled to keep the curtains open. From props to costumes, Hemme said the crew also buys a good chunk of items for the production out of pocket.
“And all of these volunteers coming together to make it happen it’s a really special experience,” she said.
Signature Productions and Broadway Stage Collective are both trying to keep the arts at an affordable price for families in the area. They host several productions throughout the year.
