LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – A 70-year-old Las Vegas man who lost his leg fighting cancer is asking for the community’s help after his car, wheelchair, and thousands of dollars’ worth of his things were stolen.
“This crime is, it’s brutal,” Johnny Law expressed.
Law told 8 News Now on Wednesday that he is trying to put things back together again.
He has lived in Las Vegas for 50 years, working as a casino dealer and donating his time volunteering with several non-profit organizations in Southern Nevada.
More recently, he has spent time creating artwork across various mediums.
“I found a way after all these years,” Law explained. “To help art enhance your life.”
Law also lost his leg more than a decade ago while fighting stage four cancer.
“Life gets a little bit tougher for some people,” Law told 8 News Now. “Especially the people who are alone.”
Law said a few weeks ago, his car was stolen from his apartment complex, near Maryland Parkway and Pebble Road, with approximately $20,000 worth of his things inside.
“You’ve got to be a real scumbag,” Law said. “To steal a car with a wheelchair in it.”
A motorized wheelchair and batteries, along with some of his welding equipment, some finished artwork, his son’s beloved book set, and his keyboard were all loaded up hours before Law was set to leave for a Thanksgiving trip.
He told 8 News Now, he packed his 2018 black Kia Soul around 11 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 23 and it was gone by 4 p.m. the following morning.
“I rode around,” Law recalled. “Thinking, did I park somewhere or something?”
Some things, like Law’s precious drawings can’t be replaced, however, he said other things could be costly to buy again.
While he said he won’t let this setback stop him, he’s hoping the community might be willing to lend him a hand.
“Me trying to help people, I’m not going to let it affect that,” Law said. “It will make me want to help more.”
Law said he hopes this will help him return to a better place.
“People like me,” he concluded. “Just don’t want to ask.”
