The U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration will conduct low-altitude helicopter flights over the Las Vegas Strip and Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix track on Tuesday and Wednesday, officials said today.

An aircraft with the Nuclear Emergency Support Team will measure “expected background radiation” as part of what the agency called “standard preparations to protect public health and safety during the event.”

The helicopter, which will travel at “relatively low levels,” is equipped with radiation-sensing technology that can provide real-time measurements of both air and ground radiation contamination, the agency explained.

On their website, the National Nuclear Security Administration added that the flights commonly occur during high-profile events, such as the Super Bowl, as part of the agency’s “dual public safety and national security mission.”

The results from these surveys “can provide the fastest and most complete picture of radiological conditions that may impact public safety and the environment.”

“These surveys are a normal part of security and emergency preparedness activities,” the National Nuclear Security Administration said in an email. “NNSA is making the public aware of the upcoming flights so citizens who see the low-flying aircraft are not alarmed.”
